It has a package cleaner that cleans up packages, cache, config, kernels and it purges your ppas.
 My Ubuntu is running faster now.

I am running bleachbit. One has to be careful here but it has functions just like windows cleaner. Next I am going to run deborphan.

I just took out the orphans. The nonorphans are the good stuff.

Howdy RainbowTrout,
Just don't get too carried away with all that 'maintenance'. I know it's probly hard to do but don't forget that linux is not windohs. If you're really pressed for hdd space, then have at er. The tools you mentioned are for cleaning up space on your hdd. If you are concerned about what is actually running and taking up runtime resources, take a look at top (or htop) and ps -A. Although, once again, I don't think you will find anything that is being mean to your box from a basic install. Linux is VERY good at memory management. I get the impression that you like to tweak on stuff. Can I suggest you point your tweak time at networking and iptables/ firewalling? I'd been reluctant to say anything before but you might be ready for it, now- gentoo linux. It's a tweaker's dream. Keep it on a seperate hdd to start because I know you're gonna break it- Lots - But you build your own kernel and your own apps from source with your choice of compiler optimizations. You can't get any more tweaky than that beyond linux from scratch. I was there once, myself. It might take you a few years to graduate from it but it'll be a great and fun learning experience. I use debian. now. I take the lazy way. It just works. All the best, man |

I am finding the Ubuntu Tweak isn't all I thought it was. Its update manager actually keeps you getting important updates from Canonical. The bleachbit actually was helping because it was taking out what Ubuntu Tweak was putting in there. I noticed Debian is up to 5.08. Squeeze can't be really that far off now. I am having failing repositories so I am in preferences taking out the restricted drivers and restricted repositories. It hasn't been able to update through Canonical in 9 days but updating now.

I think it is the Ubuntu Tweak PPA that was throwing me off. Yeah. I just want it to work. I get where you are coming from.  That compiling stuff I really am not well versed on. But I do have plenty of hard drives laying around from all the people who have given me their old computers. I am getting to be quite a hoarder with the old computer parts. I like the part about the fun and learning experience. As we say in the program, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." In other words, I am ready to make some new mistakes not just the same old mistakes I was making before.
