We should just go immediately to single payer and restructure our health care delivery to be similar to the worlds best and most cost effective health care systems. The French model has been evaluated as the world's most effective care system in terms of the lowest post-care infection rates and lowest incidence of complications and best survival statistics. A large number of the worlds countries with higher rated health systems deliver it at a cost which is 1/2 to 1/3 or even much lower than the cost in %GDP per person of the system we have here.

Single payer cuts out much of the overhead and allows for the best leverage for lowest cost for all supplies, drugs and services and there are a number of successful models on how to do make the mechanics of the system work.

We should not be satisfied with anything less than the best bang for the buck, best medical care and lowest cost system in the world but we will never be able to do that with a remnant of our wasteful bloated insurance bureaucracy or with some stopgap half measures. The sooner we take control of the system and cut out the middlemen the faster we will reap the savings - both in saved lives and saved money (reduced debt) with interest.

Excellent post. The root of the problem in the US health care system is the insurance companies. They make a "allowed" guaranteed profit on all health related costs. This means that if they are making 5% profit on a billion dollars, they will make 5% profit on ten billion dollars. Their incentive is for health cost to rise constantly so that their profits rise with them.

The new health bill was written by the insurance companies who lobbied the congress to pass it as written ... even without being read. Having an insurance system that is non-profit would help greatly but fixing the problem one piece at a time, so that it could be debated and understood would also go a long way towards making sense.

We should copy what works. Our system is the most expensive, not the best... and could end up bankrupting our nation.

The GDP for each country can be tallied and it is s fairly simple calculation:

"The gross domestic product (GDP) or gross domestic income (GDI) is the amount of goods and services produced in a year, in a country. It is the market value of all final goods and services made within the borders of a country in a year. It is often positively correlated with the standard of living."

from the Wiki...

So, when the total cost of health care is taken as a % of GDP it tells directly what percentage of the country's output is used up to provide health care. By any measure the US system is the most inefficient in the world. We are being ripped off.

And our care sucks too in comparison to a large part of the world according to objective measures. So - we deserve better and I suggest we just go for the lowest cost and highest performing system we can get. All the best cost/performance HC systems in the world are single payer and there is a good reason for that.

see the WHO reports. France is #1 and the US #37 behind Chile, Denmark, Domenica and Costa Rica....

http://www.photius.com/rankings/healthranks.html

I think we should be #1 and at a cost less than 1/3 what we currently pay.

We could make 2 changes to our current system that has been implemented by France that would immediately reduce the costs.

1. France does not allow doctors to be sued for anything. No malpractice lawsuits equals no malpractice insurance.

2. France pays for all medical school tuition. Doctors in France make 50% on average compared to doctors here.

Malpractice lawsuits raise the costs to patients.

I wonder how much total money is made by lawyers on medical suits in the US?

Let a tradgedy strike you or someone in your family because of a Drs incompetence then tell me Drs should not be sued.

The sued Drs are responsible for the HC cost increases in this instance either.
The Insurance companies are.

Comparing us to the Swiss is a JOKE! The Swiss do not allow illegal immigration AT ALL! The Swiss do everything differently from the rest of us! they also have levels of accountability we don't have.

BTW, Why is it so many Doctors come from India? They train here and stay here instead of going back. Why? They make more money her!

And this obamacare is going to rid hospitals of incompetent doctors?

Your reply doesn't surprise me.

Insuring that competent doctors are working in hospitals is not as important as having the ability to sue them..

LMAO

Healthcare in japan is not very cheap lol. The facilities are not that high of a standard. You don't have a room just a curtain separating you. For thing that we require anestesia for they may not and it's not covered.

Quoting myself since everyone wants to ignore it. How many of you actually lived in a country that has socialized HC before?

We get emergency that is among the top, in the world. IF you want more, YOU should be responsible for it, NOT the govt. No Insurance, YOUR CHOICE. YOu will still get basic care. BE RESPONSIBLE for YOURSELF. Way to many give away programs in this country.
MY OPINION.

I have lived in the UK for a year, I also have friends in the UK, France, Switzerland, and Canada

those from UK, France, and Switzerland visited or worked here in the states and were completely FLOORED by our healthcare system,,,its not just a hunch, although Im sure mismanagement can damage anything and lead to exceptions like Japan

With Obummercare, the cream of the crop will go elsewhere.

We, the peons will get the cream that should have run down their daddy's leg.

Ya' know what they call a person who passed the medical boards with a D grade?

Doctor.

I seriously doubt we will loose any significant number, given the perks of status in america and the status that comes with the label of DOCTOR
