Obama toasts 'season of progress' after big wins


WASHINGTON – Buoyant in political victory, President Barack Obama on Wednesday wrapped up a long, rough year in Washington by rejoicing in a rare, bipartisan "season of progress" over tax cuts, national security and civil justice. Halfway through his term, he served notice to his skeptics: "I am persistent."

The president who strode on stage for a news conference cut a remarkably different figure than the Obama who, just seven weeks ago, held a similar event in which he somberly admitted he had taken a "shellacking" in the midterm elections and needed to re-evaluate. This time, Obama was about to jet off to a Hawaiian holiday vacation knowing he had secured the kind of legislative wins that rarely come so bundled as they just did, particularly in a postelection lawmaking session.

Obama spoke on the same day that he found enough allies in both parties to get Senate ratification of a nuclear arms treaty with Russia, a vote watched around the world as a test of international security and presidential clout. He also signed landmark legislation to allow gays to serve openly in the military, calling himself overwhelmed by the enormity of the moment.

And that was on top of other achievements, including a hard-fought deal to extend tax cuts and unemployment insurance even as it piled on more debt, a broad food security bill, a trade deal with South Korea and declarations of progress in the widening war in Afghanistan.

"If there's any lesson to draw from these past few weeks, it's that we are not doomed to endless gridlock," Obama said. "We've shown in the wake of the November elections that we have the capacity not only to make progress, but to make progress together."

Obama or the Democrats never wanted those tax cuts to be extended,he wanted them to end.Everyone knows that.It was the Republicans who fought hard to get those tax cuts extended and I am not giving Obama ANY credit for the tax credits getting extended.If you want to give credit to anyone give it to the Republicans.

I personally don't care if President Obama gets the highest award ever awarded to a President.I am sick of this economy being in the crapper and sick of hearing bad news 24/7.I want him to accomplish things and to make this country better.If he does great things and has great ideas I will give him compliments and credit for it.I love America and want to see it great again.I want to see the economy be stronger than any others in the World.I want record job growth.If Obama does all those things then I am all for it.I don't care who does it or who gets the credit just get it done!


I'm ranting on this topic because...

1.)It was the Republicans who were pushing for the tax cuts all along and Obama getting credit for it despite his opposition to it for two years(in other words if it wasn't for the Republicans taxes would have gone to record levels).

2.)He is still farting around on stupid bills nobody really cares about.


The United States economy is in critical condition and has been getting worse every month.What is Obama doing about it???Passing DADT!Passing nuclear arms treaties!Seriously these two bills are the last thing in the World the President should be worried about and working on right now.Where is his plan for the economy?Where is his plan for the jobless people?Where is his plan for the future of this country?



Obama you gave the country DADT repealed that nobody really cared about except the gays and nuclear arms treaties that nobody cared about.

The Republicans gave us tax cut extensions which everyone cares about,and because of that extension this economy will start getting moving again.

I think Obama should step aside and let the Republicans take over for a while.Because Republicans are the ones who are listening to the people and the ones who are going to get the things done we really care about.

Again, its 100% debatable. What one side see's as accomplishments, the other see's as failures.
Thomas3474 is correct. Obama and the Dems were all against the Bush tax issue. They fought to raise taxes, but the Republicans won that battle, and only now Obama is trying to take credit for it.

tax cuts were made PERMANENT in his budget in February 2009

President Obama has said he would roll back the Bush tax cuts on higher incomes, meaning $200,000 in income for singles and $250,000 for couples. But he intends to leave in place the Bush tax cuts for people who make less than that.

When the tax cuts were first enacted in 2001 and again in 2003, the legislation came with "sunsets," or scheduled expiration dates. Without further action, tax rates will go up for everyone in 2011; at the time it was considered a way to rein in future deficit projections. So new legislation is required to keep in place current tax rates for the lower incomes.

Making the tax cuts permanent are part of the budget outline Obama presented on Feb. 26, 2009.

Obama's budget outline doesn't precisely break out how much it will cost to keep the current income tax rates for lower incomes. But an analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center found it would cost about $850 billion over 10 years.

His budget does say how much he expects to gain from raising the rates on the higher incomes. Over 10 years, it's $338 billion in additional income taxes, and another $298 billion from reducing exemptions and deductions and increasing capital gains and dividends taxes.

Congress still needs approve Obama's budget, and there will likely be arguments over many things in it. But little opposition is expected to making the tax rates permanent for the lower incomes. So for now, we're rating this promise In the Works.

He got those.

He wanted to end the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.
