One tornado when I was a kid. Only snow & ice storms for me now. First blizzard I ever got into was the blizzard of 93. Didn't know if I'd make it 25 miles back home.

We had a Nor'easter last week with winds so high that all the houses looked like igloos for all the snow stuck to them, first time I had seen that. The wind had the snow blowing so sideways that we couldn't tell how much accumulation we were getting but the dominant direction of the wind piled snow against the west side of my house. My kitchen door is at the top of three steps, I couldn't open the door and couldn't even see the shape of the steps! My neighbors had about 10 inches of snow in their yard when I had well over for feet against my house.

Not that this was such bad weather, just was amazed to learn how different the same storm can be due to the wind!

in november 1993, i was in a tornado. carried the car i was in down the road...watched several rooftops tear off and come right at the car before being thrown over the top of us. windows of buildings imploded...gas pumps shot in the air...the sky was purple and green and i felt like i was on a different world. very surreal.

when i got home, my house was fine, but the two across the street from me were completely missing.

had an ice storm here about ten years ago or so...trapped me in my house with no electricity or heat for several days. my two toddlers and i cuddled in my bed for warmth and ate spreadable cheese. two trees fell on my house.

that's pretty much it...we don't get too awful weather here.

I made a right instead of a left in the Fraser Canyon.
Driving a one ton moving van to my 100 acre recreational property in DECEMBER !
My vehicle got stuck in snow and I had to spend a cold night in it

Nothing but a bottle of scotch.

I remember praying all night, as it was too cold to sleep. Two angels driving a pick up truck woke me next morning. They said I was a lucky man. The local mill closed due to a strike and they were there only to go hunting. Otherwise, I would still be there next spring.

Now when someone tells me there is no God, I just laugh.

This past month, Connecticut has had 6 feet of snow. It normally averages just under 4 feet for a whole winter. On top of that, we actually had up to 32 inches in just 12 hours....on par with the storm I previously mentioned in this thread from my college days. The difference? Much lower winds and warmer temperatures thereby preventing drifts and other problems. Connecticut has never had this much snow within a 24 hour period, nor has it ever had this much in a single month! If we get 2 more snow storms within the next week and a half that drop a total of 2 feet, we will eclipse the seasonal record from 1995-6 in a single month, potentially making this the worst winter since the 1880s when 8 ft of unmelted snow was on the ground before record keeping began.

I experienced the Blizzard of '78 first hand. I had a week old baby, my grandfather passed away and we had to drive out of town for the funeral, just as it was arriving. I was stuck in the country, atop a hill, at the home of my in-laws for 2 weeks. My ex and his father had to walk 4 miles into town to get diapers for the baby, and my grandfather's funeral plans changed from being buried to being put into a wall vault because they could not dig.

That storm only dumped 16" in CT, not even enough to crack the top 5 biggest snowfalls....BUT, snowdrifts could be anywhere from 6 to 10 feet deep because of the wind. That's why I-95 was shut down....the snow was falling too fast and causing massive drifts under bridges and in areas with steep side banks. That storm was the first time I got stuck in the snow as a kid.....we had 5 ft drifts in my yard.

Permanently etched into my mind from that storm is Gerry Harris from Action News 8 standing in the middle of I-95 after it was shut down. At that point, the State plows had decided to try to sit the storm out because plowing was too dangerous.
