Topic: What will happen if.....

If there is a thorough (through out) hole to the earth exactly at the center.

It would collapse. The space would be filled by the materials surrounding the hole.

whatever surrounding material falls in that thorough hole...will it be able to settle down anywhere in that space...??

What speed will those particles ( material) will achieve it it reaches the centre?

Will it stop & accumulate at the centre? how about inertia???

I normally don't respond to trolls, but this question might be of interest to others.

If you somehow punch a tunnel straight through the center of the earth, one of the first things that would happen afterwards would be that the tunnel collapsed.

I think you are thinking of materials falling from the surface of the earth and falling down a hugely long tunnel - but the tunnel walls themselves at the center would collapse inward. The entire weight of the earth 'above' the tunnel would crush it down.

The material would not reach a very high speed. Yes it would stop.

It wouldn't matter, there would be nothing and noone to observe it.

Me too never respond to trolls & egoistic persons but as this question I posted is really intersting (as u admitted) hence will like to reply each funny answer like this.

My question is clear if there IS a thorough hole.It means not required to consider the case for drilling a NEW tunnel.Anyway as u have diverted the subject,I will explain..as u said tunnel walls will collapse...what next....again there is enough mass of earth which will act as wall....HAHAHA...!!!! I hope now u will not say that entire mass of earth will get collapsed in that tunnel...HAHAHAH...( THIS IS REALLY LIKE A TROLL)

& why the material falling inside will not reach high speed...???

Wont you achieve high speed if u jump from mount everest...??? or jumps into a very deep well..?? ( PL. DONT DO SO IN REAL)

IF anything falls inside that tunnel it will certainly achieve very high speed till it reaches the centre of earth due to gravitational force...but wont be able to stop there due to inertia ( as it has achieved ultra high speed). It will further travel to another end of thorough tunnel due to this ultra high speed... now gravitational force will be acting in opposite direction which will keep on reducing the speed of that object...at a moment its speed will become zero due to pulling force of gravitation...& again it will start traveeling in opposite direction again achieving high speed.....this process will continue till the object vanishes.

Well thanks a lot! Now I have to cancel the weekend's entertainment I had planned!

Also, you don't seem to understand what "troll" means.

Depends on how you're jumping and what you are wearing when you jump, doesn't it?

After all some of the adrenaline junkies base jump, and they've got the suits that make them glide. So their speed is going to be somewhat different then some who just plummets straight down, wearing 200lbs worth of gear.

So...people...can this be the cause & effect behind BARMUDA TRIANGLE MYSTERY...???

there would be a lot more suicides or space travel, or perhaps--spontaneous combustion

lovely thread.. has anyone heard about the theory of the "hollow earth" this kinds sounds like that.

About people jumping in that hole if it actually existed (which is already assuming a lot) it would either vanish due to friction or reach a balance in the center of the earth.

well ....

if you take into account that every atom is more space [hole] than matter ....

there is a continuous hole through the earth at the center and at every other spot you pick.

Oh ... and nothing unusual is happing because of it.

yes and no, because every atom is constantly moving as their electrons are. So what are the odds that at an exact point in time there is a straight line from one point to the other without colliding with electrons, protons, neutrons, and whatever subatomic particle is there? i don't think the odds are too big for that to happen.

not the point ... and neither is the OP's statement very sensible anyway ... so ... why try to use any logic ... its wasted.

and if you or I think its likely or not means squat to the facts.

there is soooooooo much more space than material in every atom... it is actually very likely ....

especially when you have to take the time to measure that straight line .... and time itself is another problem in this scenario.

if everything is stopped in that one moment in time ... the line is only straight because you think it is.... there is actually no such thing as a straight line.

It would create a black hole affect leading to a parallel universe..........in which money wasn't the all imporatant and most desirable thing in society but being polite loving and considerate even in disagrrement remained most prized and valued.......where the most polite and caring were wealthiest in a tiered society.............in essence killing each other in kindness.....and speaking to one another with respect remained the number one law of the society majority leaders
