that's awesome! Actually the whole reason I have been in college for so long is that I wanted a job where I'd be able to afford to rescue! I have a close friend that is a vet and my little sister is going to school for equine massage so in the next couple of years we hope to make that dream a reality! Keep up the good work

Firefly, where is your sis going for the equine massage? I was going to go out to Sul Ross State U for Equine management till I injured my back. The doc strongly recommended I not work with anything that big continuously. I do, but its not as a paying job, so that gives me a lot of leeway on how I do things. It's definitely been nice getting Gentry ground-trained, and messing with him the way I want, rather then how someone else would want a horse broke to ride. I'm hoping to have minimal issues with being thrown off when I finally get on him totally.

Maura, very cool. Are you 501c3 yet? Definitely a good idea. You'll be able to ask for donations then. Just be careful not to overdo it and become burned out. Aside from the money issues, several groups I know of have folded due to being overwhelmed, and rescue groups were scrambling to take in their animals.

3 fur babies -

9 year old, 11 pound Peek-a-poo named Princess Jasmine. AKA Jazzy, Jazmeanie, Jazebel and The "J". Even though her name says princess she is most definitely the QUEEN of our house! lol

Her loyal subjects (other than myself and my boyfriend...lol):

2 year old, 90 pound Bull Mastiff named Maximus and.....

Our newest edition...a 1 1/2 year old, 75 pound Pit Bull named Merlin.

Love ALL my babies!!! smitten

One, her name is Mittens. Erica's cat. Funny how everytime I get into a relationship, they always have a cat or cats. I have never made a conscious descision on my own to get a cat for myself, on my own. It has always been when I was in a realtionship. And then they leave, or pass away, and I am left with the cat or cats. I guess they will always be with me.

No we aren't a 501c yet! I have to finish school before I can take on setting up the rescue in that respect. I applied to Sul Ross as well and was accepted in 2006, but chose to come to A&M. No better place to study animal disease than the vet school. As soon as I am done I will put more focus to the rescue, but for now we just save what we can! It's seriously nice having a vet as a close friend and I take care of a few extra ponies so we will have testimonials and support letters when the time comes! I've got some one working on drawing up plans for a barn and kennel and he has some great ideas.

My sister hasn't picked which school yet! I had to break my own horse too and it went pretty well. I watched a lot of clinton anderson training dvds. The few times i have come off of her she spooked and jump sideways, she's never bucked nor bolted on me!

Very cool! I've had some issues with A&M and some of the reports coming out about cross-contamination with Coggin's testing, so they really didn't appeal to me as a school.

It definitely helps either having a vet to help out with things, or being able to do the basic, non-vet required medical stuff yourself. Our vet that we use for the horses, just hands me the basic shots, and I go stick them myself. Same with the dogs. Helpful.

I'm basically doing my own thing, though I like GaWaNi Pony Boy's view and the Native American way of doing things with the horse. A lot of the stuff he recommends, I grew up doing naturally. The others have good ideas, and ways, but as with many things, I tend to pull what I like from everyone and ignore the rest. LOL!
