I actually got this idea from a college class, and one of my daughters teachers.

The first half of the year would be devoted to reading at the least 12 short stories, then I would have them do different activities to show their understanding....like create a game that goes with the story, create a different ending..and so on..then for the second half of the year..have them create their memory book four days out of the week,with the memory book have them choose something from each grade until their senior year....a writing activity would go along with this...like Write about your 5th grade Valentine and on the fifth day have them reading from a novel

It sounds like it would. I know that the eighth grade lit teacher at my school does similar activities with her class. The lit class was studying 9th grade material. I loved doing the short stories. I am a huge fan of Poe and we did Cask of Amontillado.
