(LA Times) — Taking her campaign against obesity before the Congressional Black Caucus, First Lady Michelle Obama said childhood obesity had become a national epidemic and was particularly bad in black communities.
She said the situation had become so serious, especially in black communities, that today’s children “might be the first generation in history on track to lead shorter lives than their parents.” Obama drew laughter from the black legislators in D.C. when she said, “We all need to start making some changes to how our families eat. Now, everyone loves a good Sunday dinner. Me included. And there’s nothing wrong with that. The problem is when we eat Sunday dinner Monday through Saturday.” She called obesity, especially in the black community, the “slow, quiet, everyday threat that doesn’t always appear to warrant the headline urgency of some of the other issues that we face.” She said the obesity health problem with its nebulous varied causes had become so urgent that finding solutions could no longer be postponed. “The fact is that many of us, and many of the folks that we know and love, have struggled with our weight. And often, it becomes the kind of thing that we just sort of accept as part of our daily lives, as something we know we should do something about, but we always push it off until later. It winds up taking a back burner to more pressing issues like crumbling schools, and neighborhoods that aren’t safe, and families that can’t pay the bills or even put food on the table.” She likened the anti-obesity program to the civil rights movement and called on the legislators to initiate or join local programs to improve eating habits and the availability of nutritious foods, as well as parks, playgrounds and safer streets where children could be more active and play. To plant neighborhood gardens or perhaps create dance teams, even in faith-based institutions. Obama cited some places that have persuaded neighborhood liquor stores to add produce sections. The audience laughed. She said another way to fight obesity was to promote breast-feeding, especially in black communities where, she said, 40% of children never receive the health benefits of breast-feeding. And Obama announced $31 million in new federal grants to 11 communities to encourage innovation in fighting obesity. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ “Obama cited some places that have persuaded neighborhood liquor stores to add produce sections” ![]() Too bad the Liquor Stores are in the Ghettos. Too far to drive. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Isn't what she is doing called bigotry? Making one group, to give money to, mo special than the rest?
IMO, she's fishin' for the black vote. Cuz, until now, I haven't heard anywhere she has been active except at Sac's Fifth Ave. Otherwise, I don't think she could give a rat's asss about "her people". Is it time they did some more vacationing??? Couple suggestions; Tax 'em by the pound. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Move the Liquor Store out of the hood. When fat-asss Mama wants her daily jug her fat-asss kid has to walk farther to fetch it for her. Mama might not lose but the kid will. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

lol,,didnt care about her people,,,,,?
except for the dozen or so years she spent serving in the community in Chicago in lieu of a more lucrative career in law... ![]() ![]() ![]() anyhow,,,sounds about on track,, that America has an obesity epidemic is not news that the OBamas just broke and many things like that seem to especially affect the impoverished or underclasses of society,,,, many things are cultural (tradition based) as well as bi cultural(when traditions of one culture try to 'assimilate' into another) there was a time when african americans were more fit than others,, eating the same types of traditional meals,,,I think the difference is in how much more activity there used to be when we were working more physically strenuous jobs and hours and children had much more time playing outside and getting exercise kids were never meant to be glued to a television, computer, or telephone |

I need no explanation of why people feel pride in being american, thats their(your) perogative. There are MANY other free countries and many other countries that are no more or less lovely than this one, in my opinion.
this is just where my family has been for generations and where I have my roots and foundation,,,,but none of that has anything to do with my own efforts,,, |
