The Great Mosque of Cordoba was considered a wonder of the medieval world by both Muslims and Christians. Built on a Visigothic site, which was probably the site of an earlier Roman temple, the Great Mosque of Cordoba was begun between 784 and 786 during the reign of 'Abd al-Rahman I, who escaped from Syria to the Iberian Peninsula after his family was massacred by a rival political dynasty.
....

After conquering Cordoba in 1236, Ferdinand III king of Castile consecrated the Great Mosque as the city's cathedral. The Christian population of Cordoba used the former mosque with relatively minor changes for the next three hundred years. In the early 16th century the Bishop and Canons of the cathedral proposed the construction of a new cathedral, and proposed to demolish the mosque in order to build it. The opposition of the townspeople to the proposed destruction of the building led to the unprecedented decision, endorsed by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, to insert an entire Gothic "chapel" into the very heart of the former Great Mosque. The result is an uneasy and controversial juxtaposition: the soaring forms of a Gothic cathedral rise from the very centre of the comparatively low, sprawling prayer hall whose architectural vocabulary is rooted in the forms of classical antiquity.

the MOSQUE OF CORDOBA (begun well before cordoba was conquered) is a union of christianity and Islam

and the mosque that the center is named after

Back to basics: The 'mosque' (to use a term very loosely) is NOT religious in nature. It commemorates the site of a MUSLIM MILITARY VICTORY. It represents to them VICTORY OVER THE INFIDEL. It is RUBBING OUR FACE in 'islam's military assassination of over 3,000 AMERICAN CITIZENS. To celebrate that atrocity with a 'victory mosque' is to dishonor the dead and the site. It is also a sign of American CAPITULATION and SURRENDER. The new word to remember is 'DHIMMI'.

WRONG: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mosque

Wrong! Cordova/Cordoba Spain is what it's being named in memory of.

Imam Rauf's book, What's Right with Islam: a New Vision for Muslims and the West, narrows the pertinent time frame, explaining that the Cordoba Initiative is "named after the period between roughly 800 and 1200 CE, when the Cordoba Caliphate ruled much of today's Spain."

back on topic, the question of respecting the dead goes both ways, in my opinion, there were muslim americans who died that day too(and Im NOT talking about the attackers)

muslims have the right to build that anyone else does and I dont agree with the argument that it is disrespectful to non muslims on the basis that they lost loved ones there

What? He's the one that said a mosque wasn't religious in nature, which it is. I fail to see your point, which I usually don't see anyway, so I guess it really doesn't matter what point you were making.

I think the people who want this built are missing the big picture here.It would be common sense with this war with Islam and terrorism to do some history on who wants this built and what kind of a Muslim he is.We have already established that this man agrees with Sharia law, does not reconize Hamas as a terrorist origination, considers America as a accessory to 9/11 etc.

This man who wants this mosque built is not the type of person we need preaching from a mosque at ground zero or anywhere for that matter.Americans don't want to read new stories after this mosque is built about how this guy is telling his flock in his church that Sharia law should be mandatory in the United states. We also do not need to see women dressed in Burqas walking around the Ground zero memorial who are pouring out of this mosque.

I am also equally disgusted at the usual posters in here who start post after post saying how awful Christianity is and how we don't need it and then you are defending the right to build this mosque tooth and nail. It's hypocritical BS!You can't stand Christianity yet you support women with no rights, total domination by men, slavery, honor killing, clitoris removal, and many more.

Anyone who supports this mosque is scum.I don't care if they have the right or not. It's morally wrong,it's disrespectful,it's insulting,it goes against the will of the people, and there is no reason for us to be supporting a man who wants a building built so he can preach how women are worth nothing more than dirt.

Wow!All I can say is wow!

Seems like you can find any and every excuse to drag Christianity in this issue which doesn't have a single thing to do with anything.Yet I have not heard a single word speaking out against the horrible things people do in the name of Islam.

Nothing like saying your a Christian, yet taking pot shots at it every chance you get and using it for a scapegoat and defending Islam including those who want Sharia law.

ok, so we agree, out of RESPECT, noone should build near ground zero EVER

unless they are sexually pure and not of any belief system that terrorists might belong to,,

how am I taking pot shots at christianity,, I actually 'defend' it quite often in these forums to some of the same types of folks who lump in a whole group of religious people by what a minority of them do or have done

I havent spoke out about what people do in the name of God NOR in the name of Islam, actually, as I believe those people are laying blame for their individual choice on a higher power which I dont believe in doing , REGARDLESS of religion

muslims have proposed this building and people are opposing it because of that,, that makes it religious

its no suprise that people so readily recognize bigoted statements about christians(which was sarcasm to make a point, by the way)

but so readily propogate continued bigotry against muslims

I am about consistency, I am not BASHING anyone, I leave that to the self righteous

laugh Your defending Christianity? slaphead

I am wondering why you are defending Islam no matter what the excuse is.Seriously why are you defending them? They certianly don't care about us except to blame us for everything. The only speak death and destruction to America, the Jews, and the Christians. They haven't done a single thing at all that says in any way they respect America and the Christians who live there.

you are entitled to your opinion, but your broad damning generalizations are backed by little but public opinion and bigotry, without even the willingnes to CONSIDER any alternative,,
