Dr. Laura Apologizes for Saying N-Word on the Air

LOS ANGELES (Aug. 12) -- Talk radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger has issued an apology for saying the N-word several times in an on-air conversation with a caller that she said was "hypersensitive" to racism.

Schlessinger said on her website Wednesday that she was wrong in using the word for what she called an attempt to make a philosophical point.

"I articulated the N-word all the way out - more than one time," Schlessinger said in comments from the opening of her radio show that she posted on her site. "And that was wrong. I'll say it again - that was wrong."

She said she "realized I had made a horrible mistake, and was so upset, I could not finish the show."

Schlessinger said she pulled herself off the air at the end of the hour.

During the exchange on Tuesday's show, Schlessinger said the woman who called herself Jade was too sensitive for complaining that her husband's friends made racist comments about her in their home.

When the woman asked if the N-word was offensive, Dr. Laura said "black guys say it all the time," then went on to repeat it several times.

Schlessinger did not direct the epithet at the woman, but said she used it to suggest how often she hears it, and that it should not automatically be cause for offense.

When the caller objected, Schlessinger replied: "Oh, then I guess you don't watch HBO or listen to any black comedians."

Schlessinger also said that if the caller did not have a sense of humor about race, she shouldn't have entered into an interracial marriage.

in her defense,,, I think its one of those 'common' errors

I listened to the exchange at media matters and I just think she is ignorant to the difference between hateful speech and collective slang, she was quick to dismiss this womans feelings based upon some inequality she sees in the way that certain phrases are used


her specific use of the word was a paraphrase and not a direct sentiment from her,,


I think she missed the point, I am not a doctor but i would have advised the woman to speak with her husband about how she FEELS, but instead Laura just belittled her further for feeling how she did

At least she had enough class and grace to apologize ... I never hear any apologies from blacks who use derogatory terms about whites on air or in print ... seems there's a distinct difference here in 'cultural sensitivity' ... Good on Dr L ...

where in the media are black professionals using derogatory terms about whites?

people usually expect a more professional demeanor from a PROFESSIONAL than they do a a common person, especially persons from extremist groups

Oh poor white people, they abuse misuse discriminate and perpetrate hatred to this day, on these boards even and they don't want anyone calling them "whitey".

I don't have any sympathy for the crybabies, they need to man up.

Considering what they do to others on a daily basis just because the others are not white and part of the time because they are too ignorant to realize they are even doing it, the rest of the time they are pleasurably exerting the power they have had in this country since the white man killed off most of the native Americans.

Until there is a balance in this country or until white folks learn to stop being bigoted *****, they deserve whatever few names people got for them.

Of course there are the exceptions, those who have learned how to be considerate humans beings. And those few do not take offense to being called a name because they know that the reason for the names are valid from our history in this country actually the names are too kind considering.

I dont care who calls who a whatever, it dont bother me, in fact I prefer that we all call each other names....shows the true spirit.
