Ill try to make this as brief as possible... Most of you have heard about Michigans oil spill. The oil company has stepped up to the plate and taken full responsibilities. They have been wonderfull and kind in their response. They feel very bad about the whole situation. They have stated they will buy out those in the red zone and in the 200' of the river zone. This is approximately 30 to 50 homes in the red zone and most of my mobilehome park where I live. They are also being leinyant about the 200' area- going beyond the 200' in some cases. My mobilehome is in the 200' zone, so I am eligable for the buy out. I had decided before the spill even happened, to put my home up for sale on the 1st. Of September. I was so devastated about the enviroment and wildlife when the spill occurred, I didn't even think about the other reprocussions. One of my family members told me- you will never be able to sell your home now, being along side the river. I sadly realized they were right. I was visited by men from the oil company two days in a row. Each time asking me what they could do for me and what I needed. They said they would pay to move my home anywhere I wanted and also compansate me for my troubles too. I told them I was going to sell my home, but can't now. As for moving my home, its too old and zoning laws here won't let my home be moved. With tears in my eyes I said I'm stuck here. I was told this is my chance to get a new home and have it put in any park I want. I was told to go downtown to their office they had set up in my town and file a claim. Which I did. I was given a nice check for food and transpertation. I was also offered temporary relocation to a motel. I turned the motel down cause I can't kennel my pets, even though they offered to pay for that too. I've been toughing it out at home and leaving on and off to get away from the fumes. I felt guilty taking the check which was a good amount and for a 7 day time period-which means I can get another check latter. They will be calling me within this week to get an ascessor out to appraise my home. Here is my moral delema... Would like your opinion on what you would each do please. I was told by someone working with the public for the oil comoany that they are purchasing new mobile homes by the bulk so they get a deal for the homes. These homes value at 40,000.00 and up each. My home I purchased for a mere 2,000.00 and I own it. I just rent the lot it is on. I realize if I had sold it, I probbley would of got right around that for it. I have no idea how much my home is actually worth. Its older, but in good shape. I am actually feeling guilty- should they offer me one of these homes as part of my buy out. They are worth way more than what my home is, that much I know. People are saying take it and ask for more. I think that is being greedy. There are many who are trying to milk this situation for everything they can-sadly. I'd like your opinons. Yes I own my home and I don't want to have a morgage and start all over. Or will they just pay me for my home? I have no.idea how this works. Heck the oil company even said they would pay to move me too, including movers. Confused and just a bit in shock here...

The oip compaines are running our waters everwhere which is very rude. I would pray to God about it and leave it up to him. That's my best advice.

It is a miracle and you well deserve it!!!
Do not even hesitate ... The Universe wants to bless you ... Do NOT rob yourself of the blessing ... I am just thrilled for ya ... ... ABUNDANCE ... Claim it, Sistah ... |

You did nothing, yet you were harmed. Take the money and run. You have a VERY small window in which to act. Money AND goodwill will run out much earlier than you think. Get the property appraised. Point out any improvements you've made. The fact that you only rent the land it's on is irrelevant. Take the money and run. You will NOT get a second chance when the window closes.

Honesty is always the best policy. You will feel better about it.
Then tho...are they being honest with you? They will probally give you more money if you held out. Since NO ONE beleives anything the oil people say, they are trying to get people out of there and ofr good reason. !- Get out of there with those fumes, you'll end up with God knows what in a few years, how long have you been living with it? I would get them to sign something that if you come down with something, they are medically/monetarilly responsible. 2- Take the money, hesitate for a second...see if they offer more. You don't know- you are dealing with very smart foes- they don't care about you, they think they are getting away with something and probaly are. It isn't dishonest..it's looking out for you and your family. |

I think it's good that their stepping up and wanting to help people right now. A far cry from how big corporations usually do business.
I think you should let them help you. You were wanting to move anyway and as it was stated above, the universe is giving you green lights to do it and I don't think you should turn it down. I also don't think you need to be standing there with both hands out. Let them help, take what you need and let the greedy bastards be greedy, you don't want to be one of them. Those who are being greedy and taking advantage of the situation will get theirs when the dust settles. No good or greedy deed goes un noticed and karma is a b!tch... take what you need, do what you need to do and then you'll be able to walk away and be at peace with your decision. |

Its my cell phone, thanks Dancerea. I've deffinately been praying big time. As for fumes, my home is sealed real well. The only time I smell fumes is when I step out the door. I am however going to a motel on Monday. I can't take this being closed in my home all the time much longer.

Welll ... I know you've struggled w/ your health ...
So, getting out toot sweet is absolutely warranted here ... GLAD you are going!!! Will they pick up that tab too - I hope, I hope!? Their responsibility to absorb ALL this, just a bit shocked that they are actually steppin' up to the plate of their own making ... And so swiftly ... You are blameless ... Carpe Diem ... ... This is such an opportunity ... Again ... You MORE than DESERVE it, Hon!!! ... You are a VERY good person ... Rock it out, Sis!!! |

Ladylid what wonderful advice. Thankyou everyone. Dancere- yep they are picking up the tab. Guess I can pretend I'm on some exotic vacation. Oui my spelling!

My Daddy always told me to never look a gift horse in the mouth......

The way I see it, they've ruined any chance you had of selling that home yourself. You are completely in your rights to take the money from them. You hadn't yet put your home on the market, and here is a buyer for you. It's no different than you selling it to an individual, only you'll probably do better and not have to pay a real estate agent.
I say you are probably getting rewarded for something kind you did. |

You did not ask to live next to a toxic chemical spill.
The oil company owes you compensation. If they are offering you a forty-thousand dollar house plus expenses for your two-thousand dollar house it's because they don't want you coming after them later with a pack of lawyers claiming health problems and asking for millions. Take what you can get. |

I think the Oil co's are buying up tracts of land along a river at cheap prices...Im thinkin to them its a bargain. If someone hands you a gift take it Doll

Before signing or agreeing to anything, consult with an attorney.
Some attorneys will give a free hour or half hour to see if you have a strong damages case. |
|
|
|
I assure you if you hesitate too long you will be left without anything. Take what they offer you the motel ect to get out of there..
You are causing yourself and your animals more harm then you know by staying and being within the area of the fumes.... Health issues will result from the fumes get out of there now and check with a lawyer if you need to. But if they offer you a $40,000 mobile home take it hell I would...it is their screw up they have a lot of clean up to do and will take a while.... Get out while the getting is good or you will wish you would have... those offers do not stand long... |
|
|
|
Then, tell 'em you need your own land to put it on, including all the utilities and hooked up.
Trailer parks suck! Paying rent forever and a lot of 'em won't let you have animals. If you have your own land, you can do what you want. |
