Why are people so interested in what you paid for something? Why do they think it's okay to ask such a nosy and personal question?

My folks finally bought a travel trailer, the one they've been looking at for a couple of years. They're heading up to Michigan to pick it up, and visit the family and friends. I get 3-4 wks of the place mostly to myself, and they get a fun vacation. Nice all around.

But just about everyone wants to know how much they paid. My relatives are the worst, and we know it's not for the innocence reason they're asking, knowing our relatives.

On the plus side, insurance will give me a 600 mile radius with it. happy Can't wait to travel again.

I'm not sure why people do that. But, you're right....they do. Some anyway.

Money is a very personal issue and should be kept personal.

I don't know why people ask, but I think the main reason people don't want to discuss how much money they paid for something is because they feel that their income is linked to their performance in their career and their performance in their career is deeply tied up with their self esteem, and so they don't want to be judged or compared to others. It's a great way to turn something positive into something negitive, because we all know everybody is out to get everybody, and the world is against us... indifferent

I've had a lot of people ask me how much I've paid for tattoos... all I say is, look a the work... good tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good. Somethings are worth more to some than others. Sucks that people are so nosy. If I ever ask someone that question it's only because I genuinely want to know how much something like that costs, not to judge on the price they paid.

Or its genuinely none of anyone elses business.

It kind of reminds me of vultures sitting around picking apart the money, and what one should be doing with it, versus what they are actually doing. It also comes across as a competitive thing and oneupmanship, which is rather sad.

Good point. I have asked people I know, but only because I'm thinking of getting it myself. If if I have no interest in getting the same thing than it's none of my business.

Some people ask just because they are genuinely curious about how much a certain size / color tatoo would cost. I know I'm curious since I'm thinking of getting a couple soon.

I didn't mean specifically the tattoo....just how much someone paid for something in general.

I will talk in depth with anyone who is truly interested in tattoos. But like the OP was saying, theres a difference when people are asking just because they want to know how much you spent as a social status.

If you live in a small town like I do you get that all the time. I like to make a smart Azz comment and say I paid $200.000.00 for this hat but they threw the combine in for free. But I think most of the time if the have got the same thing or looking they are trying to find out if they can get a better deal or if they got shafted. But if you don’t want to tell what you paid for it just don’t saywinking

I constantly have people ask me how much I paid for my car or how much it's worth. My reply usually is"Sounds to me that someone has nose trouble!".I can't help saying that because"you can take a guy out of Detroit but you can't take the Detroit out of the guy!".

Ignorance, lack of manners, no class, and inbreeding ... Quick answer: "Too much".

I guess people are often just curious or nozy, but sometimes they ask because they really like it and might be in the market doing some comparison shopping. I know my cousin, a hairdresser, gets plenty of business from people who ask her customers how much they paid and then want to be referred themselves.
