I've been very happy with my Dell. It was around $550, I think.
I have had two HPs for work over the last year and half and have not been happy at all with them. Both have had issues with overheating.

As a computer tech, I always advise my friends to buy Toshiba, Acer, or if they can afford it - ASUS. I've never been called to fix one of these computers.
Brands to AVOID - HP, Gateway, Dell. It seems like no matter where I go, these are the computers I'm fixing. And they all have their own little interesting glitches.
