OH! little things like....spitting blood for a few months.....not being able to breath and having to sit up to do so......trying to sleep sitting up laying on the back of a dinette chair gasping for air....being burning hot one second and freezing cold a few seconds later....then it starts getting bad from their on. (How my father died!) Yep! and he was one who knew too much and would never get cancer......he was too smart and knew what his body was doing healthwise.

He did not have much trouble with treatments......it killed him first!

Remember this...."The cigarette smokes, not you......you are only the sucker!"

for the money machine called the tobacco industry.

Sorry about your Daddy. I believe that is a personal choice and none of your damn business.........smokin

Only by new information can one make a new choice. I can give proof of effects to the public the same as any. With the restraining of information all things stop cold for lack of the new choices. I did not comdem you for smoking or judge you. The sucker line is more a truth in jest. IS your choice your right... but who pays the bills and who has to deal with the death and cost there of. Only after you pay up ahead for all and make right the sorrows you put others to, do you OWN THE RIGHT OF CHOICE. But like most you will do as you will and leave others to clean your mess. Only you know if you are doing so or not.

If he leaves any 'mess' behind it won't be your problem..or 'mess' to deal with so don't bother yourself or anyone else with it. It's HIS choice as mine and all who choose. Let it go man..

Agreed, but when I started smoking my mother's cigarette buts at 9....I definitely was not aware of addiction what it was or how it affected people.....all I knew was the cool people were doing it on TV, at home, and all around me.......not an excuse for today agreed...but definitely how I got here......wish I had known better.

I hope you can get free from them. When I was nine I used my mind to think of the foolish things that caused trobles in life. I at the age of 9, made a choice to not smoke, in doing so I would never died from cancer from smoking, not to drink, I would never be an alcoholic, ....many other wise choices at that early age. Each to his own! I learn long ago that to impress others is foolish, they are not worth the effort. Your best friend will for the sake of $5 hate you for life even if it was only a mistake. Live not for people but for yourself without harming others and in peace as is in you.

Honestly, it still sounds like you're making an excuse for where you're at now. It is definitely a personal choice. But, no matter how you got there, you have the choice to continue or quit.

Oh, what bs! If you are making less money than me, then I am subsidizing your life with the higher taxes I pay. Shall I dictate how you live your life? And maybe you've forgotten that the vast majority of the cost of a pack of cigarettes is tax: used to send your kids to school and pay for your nice smooth roads, and oh yeah, to cover the costs of the health care you don't want to have to pay for with your taxes, the ones that are being used to fight a war I never agreed with. Take your self-righteous views somewhere else.

the number of dating possibilities I lose out on because of it.

Maybe one will inspire you to want to quit...but really if and when we quit it needs to be for us, not another.

If it's meant to be it will be...

I quit once for a woman I was dating. For 6 months.

I started back up when I went to work one night and found the equivalent of a bag of pot all spread out over the EMPLOYEE restroom's counter. With a used pipe. After I fired the guy responsible, I was so pissed I went home and smoked a whole pack before dawn. Haven't stopped since.

I quit once because some one asked me to...didn't last long. If and when I quit it will be because I don't want to smoke anymore. It really is that simple. If it excludes a date..or whatever, then it just wasn't meant to be.

So very glad you had the self-esteem and wherewithall to make those decisions at 9. Not everyone does, nor do they always know.

I started at age 23. I was married to "The Wicked Biotch of the West" at the time and I was going to be a little self-destructive or I was going to kill her. One of the 2.

I'm not preaching to anyone. It's your decision to smoke or not. I just like to see people take responsibility for their decisions, rather than blaming them on something else.

No excuse just the truth about how it got started. I already admitted it controlled me. I am not making excuses, just statin the facts....that when I was nine the information was not readily available as it is for today's youth.

Well, we did get duped back then. Hell we had a spot at our high school where we could smoke..we could buy them, we could put 2 quarters in a vending machine when ever we wanted.

It is still our choice and I've known many who have given it up because they wanted to enough..it's tough, I've tried. I don't drink, I don't drug. I work out and hike, I eat healthy, I take supplements, do all I can to be as healthy as I can...for a smoker.

I just had a yearly physical, pap, mamaogram, blood work, organ testing. My doctor tells me I'm as healthy as one 15 years younger than me so I'm not gonna beat myself up because i have one vice, addiction.

When some one gets on me for smoking and their drinking every day or 50 pounds over weight..well they need to be worried about their own health, not mine.

I'm not seeing where seakolony is making excuses..she said 'no excuse for today, I just wish I would have known better'. It was different for us..we were allowed to buy them, smoke them at school.. outside, walk down the street with them, there were no warnings on the packs back then. We did get duped.

I own my addiction, I know the risks and costs involved very well..it is my choice. If someone would have told me the potential dangers maybe I wouldn't have smoked, maybe I still would have...I don't know because it's very hypothetical.

Everyone knows the dangers of drinking..yet how many are doing that every night, every weekend, every celebration. We all know the warnings of being very over weight..the risk of heart problems from that. So lets not judge so quickly another's addiction. We all have some...

I never understood why so many people complain about the smoker. I tell you what. If you can think of a better way to raise 12 billion dollars (Fed only) in annual tax revenue with having public outcry I'd like to hear it.

Tobacco taxes are the only taxes that can be raised without any objection from the public at large. Raise your income tax? How about taking more from your paycheck every week? Add a tax to doughnuts? Not going to happen. We won't even vote in favor of an increased sales tax. Most tobacco taxes go to help children too. It's the main funder of the last child health care bill.

So stop being hypocritical towards the smoker. You want him or her to pay for all of these little extras that we have, and then you don't want them to actually use the items they purchase in order to fund them. I'm not even going to talk about sending thousands of farmers and other workers in the tobacco belt to the unemployment line, that obviously escapes most peoples minds. Then, I'll also add that there is a historical significance to the plant. Some native tribes actually place a spirital value on the plant.

On a more personal note, I quit smoking two years ago the same way I started, with a conscious choice. I've watched several family members die of cancer, and not all smoked. I still think that there is absolutely nothing wrong with a person living their life with a few vices, but I also expect there to be some good manners involved as well. As far as I can tell, the modern smoker is much more polite about his/her habit than former generations and maybe it's time the rest of us lightened up a bit.
