global warming or just crazy weather?

AT 120 DEGREES IN AUSTRALIA , IT WAS SO HOT FOR A WEEK THAT KOALAS
WERE ASKING PEOPLE FOR WATER. IT'S NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE.

ONE WENT TO A HOUSE TO TRY TO HIDE FROM THE HEAT AND TO GET A BIT OF SHADE AND HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED WHEN THE OWNER GAVE HIM SOMETHING TO DRINK. IT'S REALLY CUTE.

SO precious, one could forget they were wild bears.

The animals always seem to sense things first.
Things we don't have a clue about.
And to see the people giving them water..
I always wonder, how might the reverse work?

Hiya Skydancing....flowerforyou

Excuse the pedant within me....

I do have to point out, it's a myth that they are bears...

they are a marsupial, and belong to the same family/genus as the wallabies, kangaroos, and bilbies....another of the weird quirky critters that are unique to Australia only.

(I know they look like cute fluffy teddy bears, though, but you should hear them talk to each other!!! They growl, grunt and chuff...very fierce sounding)

They are!!!...and the coolest thing is to see one wander across the driveway with not a care in the world...whilst a mad flurry of brake slamming, in a four tonne truck, nose down a steep hill, on loose decomposed granite....scared

We have a photo of my eldest son when he was all of 7, (he's 25 now), crouched down beside this young male Koala on our driveway of the farm.

What people may not be aware of, is they are habitat exclusive, territorial, they don't relocate well...so when their food source is removed, they starve...so bushfires, 'human progress'...literally annihilates another whole colony of them.

Ahh thanks Jess, I learn things
every day in here :-)

So, might they be considered less dangerous as
marsupials than bears?
Are they made pets where you live?

Dangerous?...two males in rutting season are not to be fooled with...they actually grow to be the size of a (trying to find a comparative critter...beaver, maybe?)...and they are quite fierce...extremely sharp claws, and great set of teeth on them.

They don't attack humans, EVER...they are usually 'stoned'...is the best ummmm way of saying it...the eucalypt leaves that they eat...ONLY...(and only a select few species)...has a digestive reaction for them, and has a calmative, sleepy effect on them...so are usually very mellow as a general rile.

Pets.....hmmmm....no, we respect the extremely diminished numbers of colonies too much....even the injured and rehabilitated Koalas go back into their colony...unless disabled and unable to care for themselves, then they are cared for in sanctuaries.

Id like to point out too...the photos offered are date stamped 30th january...that is the height of our fierce summers, where 38-40 degrees Celcius is common for weeks on end...and the eucalypt leaves dry up, even when still on the tree...so the moisture content is greatly diminished, hence the obvious need for moisture.

I do like that the koalas in these shots have learnt not all humans are arseholes...and will assist them in times of distress.

hahahaha...I feel a little like Steve Irwin!!!...I have to go...it's 6.15 am here, and work is almost over for the day...

if you're genuinely interested in learning a little more about aussie critters, Australia Zoo..(Steve Irwin's sanctuary) has a multitude of answers for any questions you have....

and thankyou for being remotely curious about our wonderful unique critters...
