Been in and out all day, mostly gardening. Have a small 20x20 front space that gives just enough life, light, water, etc.
Also have had lizards there, among other creatures.
Have had one reptile who has been around for awhile, thats been decided by his size to be the granddaddy of all the others.
The other night, about 1:30 am, heard rustling in my desk that was reading at at. Dang, thought. Something's in there, the mice are back..
Thats why got the cat, thinking the smell of Willow would send them packing.
So, about 1/2 hour ago, came in from working outside and stepped on something, it was dark from coming from the outside. Moving right near my desk, me not realizing since there are about 10 dog toys sprawled all over my floor.
It was the lizards tail and it caught my eye because it continued to keep moving while I buried it.
The lizard, ran under my couch, with no tail. I feel REALLY bad about him losing his tail under my foot. What the heck was (s)he doing in the first place, relaxing in the lr @ 6:30 in the evening when I have 2 dogs and a cat in the same room?

This is not one of my fields of knowledge and wondering if anyone knows something about desert reptiles?
(S)He is a very pale tan with bluish-gray 1/2-3/4" bands.
Will it survive?
Realize that lizards do have that escape mechanism of releasing their tails when caught by something, is there anything else that can be done to help? should I feed it? what? ground meat? H20?
It's a fluke that it's in here, so need some input please?
BTW, I am not kidding.

The lizard should be OK. I'd be more concerned about the cats and dogs, if the lizard was poisonous.

OMG..... FUNNY!!!! Even though I know you are serious.
You lizard slayer you.
On a serious note, please let nature take its course. Yes the lizards tail will heal and regrow.
Your resident lizard already has enough food in your 20X20 garden of Eden or he/she would not have resided with you this long.
It's diet is in your yard!
I love my son, the reptile prince.... My ex will still not visit him due to his 3 snakes which includes an albino boa constrictor and two dragon lizards. His lovely lady de-tailed one of his lizards with a simple closing of a door!
Must say that the lizard ran and looked funny for about a year!
His lizard did not eat for 10 days he told me today. He had dropped 3 live mice in the terrarium and the dragon watched them for days running around.
This is natural I'm told as they slow their body down to heal.
His dragon ate well on the 12th day as there were no mice in the cage.
He also states that he has raised Dragons who have been trained for a diet.
He advised me to tell you to not disturb natural animals in our environment. We may want to help but may be killing them with kindness.
Hope this helps...

The tail will grow back, although he can't loose it again. They got this "once in a lifetime" opportunity to loose their tails and have it grow back.

Wouldn't that be cool for guys? rofl

No- wouldn't disturb him now that he is in serious respite, just wondering now if should put some water out for it. (S)He is under the couch, know how got in.
Just how big are the Dragons your son raises? Family size or bigger?

So, how do I know if this is 'once in a lifetime' thing? One of my older brothers had a blue tongued skink who had lost his tail again, kinda sad and he (the skink:tongue: ) knew it and was like 'oh well...' Very personable tho.

I think you can tell by the tail. I foget how though. I tried to look it up, but I couldn't find anything helpful.

The lizard you stepped on was not venomous. The only two venomous lizards in N. America are the Gila Monster and Beaded Lizard. (only two medically significant anyways, there is some research to suggest that many agamids are evolving to be venomous.) The two aforementioned lizards don't drop their tails.

Google lizards and see if you can ID it.

More than likely since it lost it's tail so easily it's prolly a gecko.

First things first. Its a mama. If you have seen similar lizards that are smaller, they are juvenile or male. Among lizards, females are bigger. Another give away for sexing lizards, look behind the armpits of the forelegs. If it is yellow or blue. It is female. With birds, males are the showy ones....with lizards, females sport the sexy colours. ( Drives the males crazy when they do their mating dance.....they sit there and do push ups like crazy to show that they are ready to put on some Barry White and make some sweet luvin)

Secondly, from your part of the country, my guess is it is a Mountain Boomer.....completely harmless unless you are an insect.

Don't sweat the tail thing. While all reptiles have slow growth rates as all ectotherms do, their tails regenerate fairly quickly to be shed at signs of serious danger....which predators don't mind cause the tails provide that juicy lizard taste with no fight.

Don't bother setting out water unless you are trying to drowned it. Lizards get most of thier moisture from insects and vegetation and the rest from licking dew from leaves.

If you can shoo it out the door....try it. (It will never run in the direction you want) It either found a crack in the foundation or just sashayed in the door as it was cracked.

If nothing else....it is all white meat and tastes like chicken.

I did a lot of paleontology work for the museums of Natural History back in the day.

sounds like a fence lizard. i used to raise them.
they heal quickly from a lost tail. they like mealworms.

yummy.

he/she should be fine. should be able to escape the
dog and cat most days.
