Thanks Miss W, that is a helpful tip. I do love spackle though.

Agreed. Spackle's great! Too bad it doesn't worked on hearts though. ohwell laugh

Duct tape is awesome.

Duct tape is a girl's best friend. Strapless push-up bra...$50 at the lingerie shop. Cleavage cheap...$4.99 at the hardward store.laugh One of a million practical uses. bigsmile

So, I'm big on home repair/improvement and I'm learning alot. Being a single lady tends to do that to ya. Anyway, let's talk sinks. Mine was leaking, found the leak (trial and error), replaced the connectors, resealed the drain (plumbers putty is actually fun), taped the threads, reconnected and tightened the nut and voila, no more leaky sink. But I digress. This got me thinking about a slow draining sink upstairs and I wanted to put draino in it but wasn't sure it would go down the drain with that little sliver stoppy thingy in it so I pulled to see if it would come out.

Oh it came out all right and what was all over it was DISGUSTING. Gunk, mold, etc. So, wire hanger equals snake and what I pulled out of there was even more disgusting. As Chrissy the tool chick, I recommend snaking all your drains, using draino and a good hot rinse to ensure proper drainage.

Anyone else want to share their home improvement tips?bigsmile

I do all my own home renos too and found plumbing quite easy; love the compression fittings. Even put in some new lights, flooring, building a fence, and installing kitchen cabinets. I recently pulled the carpeting off my basement steps. Home Depot recommended Stone Effects. It was a disaster and spent weeks scraping it off. Leave that stuff for driveways and outside; not meant for basement steps. Cheers

MeChrissy you are so evolved!!!!

I still pay exorbitantly when I
need something done. I have learned
though, to keep those drains clean
all the time without snaking,
ACE Hardware has this stuff, just
for hair in sinks and drains. And it
only takes 10 minutes as opposed to
all night with Drano. I use it regularly
now, and no clogged drains.

Sometimes, I hire someone to pour
it in :-)

Sky, evolved? No way. Just a realist. The house aint gonna fix itself or so it seems.grumble

Navy, had the same issue with sand paint. Goes on like regular paint the dipshit at Lowe's said. It took me 8 hours and two gallons to get the texture right in a very small room. It looks great now and it's a damn good thing because it will be here until I die.laugh

I also worked with a guy who ran a 'snake n rooter' drain service. His recommendation was very hot water about 1 gallon with a cup of vinegar poured down the drain every month.

I do this, but before I put in the vinegar,I pour some baking soda in for the 'bubbling effect', then the vinegar, followed by hot water. I do this every couple of weeks, for the tub and sinks, and it seems to work great.

Cool trick. I picked up 12 boxes of white webbed christmas lights. 4'x8'. 150 lights each. (They were $.25 each)

I am replacing my ceiling lights with them and it looks awesome!

Years ago I saw on HGTV this guy who had a
crappy ceiling, he took Christmas lights
and put them behind a piece of crown moulding
dropped 8 inches from the ceiling all the way
'round.

So when I got a house with a creepy ceiling I
thought of that and used rope lights instead,
behind the crown moulding, peeps remark on it
every time, also I put them on a dimmer, which
sounds like something you might consider.

Looks really cool..

Actually I pour bleach down the drains about every two weeks it breaks up the gunk and lets it move down the drain.... In the tub I have a strainer to catch hair after pulling up a wad of it with the snake.... Then I rent a industrial snake about every 3-4 years to clean out the outside pipes...... from tree roots ect...

Also Shasta, I painted the crown moulding,
plus the 8 inches above it, the same color
as the crappy ceiling and it just looks great. :-)

Dammit, I can't get the little silver stoppy thing back in. It falls right to the bottom and I have to pry it back up with my nail. WTF?

More helpful tips.

Never mix bleach with comet or any cleaner with ammonia....makes the same invisable chlorine gas the military uses.

Putting half a cup of plaster of paric will stop up a drain permanently.

Powdered creamer is highly flamable and a pound of it rendered airborn can fuel an implosion bomb that will suck the windows inside of a room.

Writing with lemon juice renders invisible ink that can be read when heat is applied.

Pretty interesting stuff.

On the pipe that comes directly from the drain will have a port on the side which unscrews. The stopper nests in it at a certain angle.

I will share something funny with you... when I suddenly found myself single with four sons, I didn't want them raised like they were raised by a single mother so, I took them fishing, taught myself how to do basic plumbing and electrical, built fence and a smokehouse and started doing most of my own car repairs. My heart was in the right place but it totally backfired. My boys now think that women should be able to do everything. They call me when their cars break down and my oldest even said once (before he got married), "I want to marry someone like you so I can be a housewife." LOL!
