I am liking the new KDE 4 for all its cool stuff but I like the ease of use with the Gnome. Running Ubuntu 10.4 and I am glad it says it almost fool proof.laugh I just about didn't get back on but it had the failsafe gnome login.

Hey Rainbow,
Back a few years ago, I was trying all those different O/S's and it bout drove me crazy!

(notice I said "bout drove" me crazy, but I'm sure their those that think it succeeded)

I even got to a point that I was going to set up a separate PC, for each of the O/S I was liking. Hmmm, big idea that was...and expensive as well.

This is about the time I was checking the Mac, and got more and more into it. I started stepping away from the others, gradually.

Anyway...long story short...I ended up with a Mac(primary) and PC(secondary) only.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing with the different one, and seeing what features it had, over the others...but not so much anymore.

Main reason for this post, is to say I know how much you must enjoy those many different O/S's. Have fun with'em.

Yeah. They are fun to play with. I had fun with my first Color2 by Tandy long ago. I had fun with the old True Blue by IBM. Been On line since 1995 with Windows For Work-groups then. Computers sure are fun.

Remember when you had to call the individual computers by phone-modem (bulletin boards)...running at 14.4 bps?

My long distant bill has been as much as $300+ a month.

Used to get the magazine with the listed systems you could call and log onto.

I barley remember the one just slower than that. But when 14.4 hit the market...I thought a "flight jacket" should have been included!

This was after I built my first XT running at 4 - 6 mhz and 8meg of RAM. That was a fast machine!

The VERY first was the Commodore 64, but...that's another story.

OK, enjoy your O/S's...

I hear ya on the slow connections. I built one computer with the motherboard out of a X-ray machine. I had all the parts on a kitchen table. Looked like a rat's nest but I got on line with it. I was at work one day and the supervisor said well we will come back tomorrow and see if it is downloaded, yet.laugh The computer was hooked up to the new Ethernet they had at the plant that was somehow connected to the Internet.

GNOME.KDE is overkill.

KDE FTW!

Actually, I don't really care since konqueror (and kde apps in general) will run on either. Its really the kde apps, esp. konqueror, that I love so much.

Gnome, I grew up in C and GTK. Don't like the C++ and QT foundation of KDE.

I've been loyal to KDE since it was in 2.x. GNOME just always felt a little wrong. Amarok, KStars, and Konqueror are quite frankly the best at what they do.

When I using my computer passively, i actually enjoy gnome. it feels gentle.

when i'm assertively trying to get stuff done (and haven't install KDE-based tools), gnome feels like a straightjacket. i spend more time on the command line because the gui tools seem so inadequate. Konqueror FTW!

well i guess depends on the machine i use. if the specs not good enough, i'll use gnome, cos kde feels heavier that gnome imo.

but once i used this stone-age pc (well it's not exactly like that :P), with ram only 128 MB, try use KDE and gnome, and good God, u can sleep first and made urself some coffee until it's finish one thing. Then I tried xfce and blackbox, and really my problem with slow pc gone.

Yes! Linux (the kernel) is more environmentally sound and better for poor people than either windows or macos.

As the software advances in windows and macos, you are forced to upgrade to the latest hardware to keep up with the advancing software - this leads to more usable machines being sent to the landfill, and poor people being unable to afford a machine that can run modern software.

With linux, you can use the latest kernel and simply choose a leaner GUI/desktop environment...and get many years more life out of older, cheaper hardware.

Yeah, and it's proved by my friend using only text based mode,he built a simple router from pentium 2, imagine pentium 2, with ram only 32 mb...and its running smoothly.
I forgot he used what linux distro.
