I just put Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer Aspire 6930. It's awesome! I've tried Ubuntu once before and I liked it, but it seems like it got even better. Since the Acer has a bad HDD, I'm only going to be using it for surfing the web, but it looks like it will do well.

You should be able to replace the hard drive easily! I remember Acers have a cover you remove to get to the HDD. There are disk utilities to possibly fix it too. Scandisk is one. Disk Genius also does some repair work. I would say if that is the only issue of your computer then replace the HDD and save yourself a grip of cash.

I have a computer with 9.4 in it and it had some small issues but nothing I could not get past. Ubuntu 10.4 is supposed to be a massive leap in progress. Ubuntu completely redoes their OS every six months and uses the open source community to make improvements based on real world necessity. Not like windows and their cheap attempt to dump an OS X ripoff on us in the form of Vista.

Did they bring back the Bouncing Cow screen saver? Version 8 lost the Bouncing Cow and that screen saver was the shiznit!

I didn't see the bouncing cows screen saver, but they have one that looks like fish swiming around, that's pretty cool.

I haven't had an issue with it yet. I found a 1TB HDD I'll be ordering soon, hope it works as I plan.

They had 2 TB in store i think. I prefer got 1.5 TB, it really had the cheapest price/GB...oh and it's WD green (for more less power consumption ;) )

I've been looking at the Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10TPVT at Newegg.com.

I could not get the multi monitor to work with ATI at all with a 9600 pro. It worked with my Nvidea GeForce 6800 though. Supposedly 10.4 was going to address ATI legacy support more. Supposedly you need to use ATI X series cards but Ubuntu seems to be ATI unfriendly. Seems kind of lame since there is a lot of ATI out there.

Yeah, and ATI has a good records lately. And to compare my 9500 and hd5670 (well must use winxp n opensuse on other box) :
- fallout3 never crashed with ati hd5670, but with 9500, after more than 6 hrs playing,it crashed successfully :P
- with opensuse, watching anime with good animation still better ati hd5670.
Well that on other box, cant wait when my ati hd5670 n ubuntu running smoothly.

My 256 MB ATI PCI Express is working great on Ubuntu 10.4.

I burnt two isos from LiMP and Puppy and they show up on another old Gateway but neither of them want to load.

Now its 10.04.1laugh Glad they fixed the crasher later in the day. Debian helped us with Gnome. This morning it didn't want to restart or shut down. But they sure got it fixed fast.

You could just choose not to install the linux offered ati-compatible graphic driver, but go ahead and download the ati driver from ATI. I think there is a difference. It's the easiest to install it through the terminal..the ATI site has a installation walkthrough who are not so familiar with the terminal commands.

Downloaded Streamtuner. It is awesome. It is free radio that uses audacious. You can get at Ubuntu Software Center. It uses streaming. I like the Xiph, electronic section.

Oh KOOL! I may need some help. I bought a nice used system that had ubuntu 9.04 on it. Evidently all the necessaries hadn't been finalized as i could never get it completely up and running. Now I have 10.04 on it and love it. Love the space photos screen saver. However now I'm going through hoops trying to get it to recognize the external modem. Wish me luck. It's been a LONG time since I have dealt with typing commands *grin

It sticks rocks. Sorry for finishing your sentence. I can't wait to understand this virtual machine thingy that allows Windows to communicate with Linux. I posted it in a new thread.
