(April 1) -- When the Westboro Baptist Church, an anti-gay group based in Topeka, Kan., picketed the 2006 funeral of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder bearing signs that read "God Hates the USA," the serviceman's father, Albert Snyder, sued for infliction of emotional distress, winning an $11 million judgment in 2007.

End of story? Not even close.

Snyder's reward was reduced and then overturned on appeal, with a decision upholding the Westboro group's right to free speech. Additionally, a 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge last week ordered Snyder to pay $16,510.80 of the Westboro Baptist Church's almost $100,000 in legal fees.

Albert Snyder was ordered to pay some court costs incurred by members of the Westboro Baptist Church who picketed his son's funeral.

"It was bad enough that they reversed the decision, but then to tell me I had to pay them money so they can do this to more military funerals, that's what hurts the most," Snyder, of York, Pa., said today on ABC's "Good Morning America."

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case in the fall, but in the meantime the legal battle has sparked a national dispute over free speech and privacy for military families. A grassroots fundraising campaign to help Snyder has reached Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, who says he'll cover the $16,000 tab.

Well, it looks like O'Reilly has made a point in my favor on this one.

He better be careful, doing stuff like this may get him kicked off the prejudice FNC.

It is really sad to see the people utilize a family mourning for their political statements.

Soldiers have already given all for this country even if the war, or the soldiers lifestyle wasn't in agreement with someone, their death is really not the place or time to make a point, in my opinion.

O'Reilly is kind of a pompous blowhard and annoys me

but it is cool that he is doing that. I'll give him that much

I was watching this evening (left the channel on while I was reading) and he got into a big argument with their legal consultant over it. She whittled him down with the facts. It was kinda cool to watch

This is one of the few times I definitely agree with you, Dragoness.

What those people did was WAY out of line.

I think O'Reilly is an idiot most of the time, but I applaud him for stepping forward in this case.

I'm not quite seeing the " partisan attack " that the poster was speaking of.

Maybe I'm just missing something??

All I saw was that she ( the OP ) was saying that what O'Reilly ( whom she almost ALWAYS disagrees with...and that's putting it mildly at best...lol ) is doing is good.

I dunno, if it were me I would start a big movement for all the gays to meet at the Westboro Church and disrupt their services

Although tit for tat isn't really cool, I like this.

Might end violently though, I saw the signs they had at the funeral and they weren't nice.

Is this religious fanaticism at it's best? Torturing people who are grieving?

The signs they were holding up were so disrespectful to the dead soldier, his family must have been just devastated.

It shows prejudice and hatred is not absent from the church that is for sure.

I really don't think there has ever been much doubt about that. Except, of course, the denials of it from those IN the church.

I think the Christians out there regard the Westbourgh baptist church as a church that has gone completly insane. It's churches like this one that give Christianity a bad name. The vast majority of churches our there are pro military and for our military because they regonize the war is a battle between good and evil.I understand the Westbourgh crowd thinks that dead soldiers are payback for homosexuality. What a crock!God has never punished good people by killing them and letting the bad people live.

I'm sure one day Westbourgh will do something radical like the Jim jones crusade.I urge all Christians to stear clear of Westbourgh as they clearly are not speaking the truth and I wouldn't be surprised if they were not Christians at all but some radical Atheist group only put there to start a smear campaign against Christianity.
