Outside of religion I do not see the purpose of marriage.

it provides the only legitimate excuse to drink alcohol

I'd be just as happy in a lifetime commitment without saying the 2 dreaded words. If marriage comes along great but i'd be just as happy with a long term boyfriend. My mom has never been married and never will get married lol.

Marriage seems to be important to humans and a few other mammals. Most animals don't need that piece of paper to do their thing.
Only humans require it....

...why bother??? Besides the financial gains, whats the point in being married...can't we love and be in a monogamous relationship with someone for the rest of our lives without marriage???what what what

Financial gains, I don't know if that is an accurate assessment. Some partners put you in debt so bad you can't get out of it even after they have left this world.

Legally a spouse has rights to make choices for their spouse. Doesn't seem like much until you are in a coma and the decision comes up to pull the plug. Or you are mentally unwell and have to have a vacation at the mental get well hospital and people need to make choices for you on the outside. Just a few examples here.

To have someone claim that you are the love of their lives means something at least at the time. So there is always that.

I am actually not a fan of marriage myself but I do see the legal reasons for it.

i think when my mom dies i'm gonna call all my aunts and uncle and cousins. then i'm gonna set the house on fire and tell them whatever they can make it out with they can have.

. . .

My brother and I walk through the house divvying it up in front of them. pitchfork We basically have agreed over everything as to who gets what.

The will is for just the 2 of us and the animals. No one else, no nephews, nieces, etc.

We aren't that concerned about it, but it's highly amusing to aggravate the folks.

It's vow of commitment before God, man, and the world.

If God is not in your life,, I dont see the point. For me , the point is to be joined together by and invite God into the relationship. The exchange of the vows to each other and God gives it much more purpose,,,to me.

OK, I am a Christian and a strong commitment to God, so I'm confused. Do you need that piece of paper to make a vow of commitment before God. "To be joined together and invite God into the relationship". I've heard of couples having a 'commitment ceremoney' In those early Bible days when marriage was talked about,
how different was it. Did Sarah and Abraham have to get a piece of paper? How were they married. They didn't have those papers, so were they legally married?
How was marriage back then? They didn't have a paper to solidify their commitment.

Marriage should have stronger guarantees. Like a blood oath. You cheat, you die, you want a divorce, you die. Don't wanna have sex, you die. Wanna be an angry bit** or a**hole, you die! Hey they talked about stuff like this in Leviticus, so maybe it's doable.

Drop your jocks on the floor...you die...

Forget the milk....you die...

Leave the toilet seat up...you die...

Belch whilst excessive use of the remote.... you die...

'Realign' the gonads whilst speaking to your partner....you die...

yeah this will work!

whoa

well, as opposed as I am to violence,, perhaps it would make people take sex AND marriage quite a bit more serious and give them justifiable reason to take pause without hurt feelings,,,

dont forget abandonment either ,,,if you leave your marriage for other than business purposes or war,,,,,for longer than six months at a time WITHOUT a consentual agreement

I have been in ONE relationship that lasted for 11 years. One that lasted for 4 years.

The other 3 have been under two years.

Why in the blue HELL would I want to get married when it's already been established that no woman is able to deal with me for very long??

Hey msharmony, how ya doin'? Yes that was kind of my point. People don't take marriage vows seriously anymore, and the lawyers are getting fat, and people are getting hurt. All the more reason to not get married anymore, despite what the scriptures might say. It's not worth the heartache if it all goes sour.flowerforyou

I agree. It is meant to be a lifetime commitment upon which SOCIETY itself stands,,,when it goes so does the rest of the world....and I struggle with my decision to divorce for that reason that the vows were a serious matter to me,,,,but when there are kids involved those two exceptions(adultery and abandonment) become more relevant in trying to give them some sense of what a healthy marriage is(fidelity and partnership),,,

kids learn alot from the example we set,, even in the marriage,, which is what sometimes gives me solace about my decision. I wouldnt want my son feeling it was ok to cheat on or leave his spouse abandoned and i wouldnt want my daughter to think she should accept someone who did,,,
