most of my adult years I have heard over and over how african americans are such a majority of prisoners but that is perhaps false information,,,,,,

In a debate at the historically black college, Gravel said, "one of the areas that touches me the most and enrages me the most is our war on drugs that this country has been putting forth for the last generation."

Then he put forth statistics. 2.3 million people in jail. 70 percent of them African-American. Yikes. He got the first one right, but that 70 percent figure? That's not just wrong, that's Pants-On-Fire wrong. The real figure, according to the June 2007 report of the Bureau of Justice Statistics that counts federal, state and local jails, is 40 percent.



WOW,,40% incarceration as opposed to 70%,, I wonder how such false information (the higher numbers)took such a stronghold

Oh geeze.

They ( the powers that be and the mass media ) HAVE to make it sound like African Americans are being " picked on " and incarcerated at a higher rate.

If they didn't, they couldn't sit there and wring their hands about how unfair the country is to the African American community.

We are in an age where people, for the most part, just take what the media says at face value. There is no real attempt by most to educate themselves in the reality of things.

I'm not saying that ratio of African Americans to whites or Latinos in prisons isn't out of whack...but how about this....

STOP COMMITTING CRIMES!!! STOP blaming " society ".

That's not true. There are half way houses, house arrest and parole. Which some prisoners are still considered such (Other then Parole) and fall under the Dept. Of Corrections or Federal Prison Bureau.

theres so many people in this country that are in prison or jail that i think we were all born with a birth certificate and a furloughlaugh

it's not just about crime, it's about the people doing the arresting, charging, and the sentencing.

that's WHY it's out of whack. (at least, that's what we learned in my social problems class.)

a person of color is more likely to be incarcerated.

Your playing with numbers ..blacks are appox. 10% of the country but 40% percent of the prison pop. I don't think they are { by head count ] the morjorty of the prisnors . I'd guess its the mexicans now . That figure about blacks says the rate is 4 to 1 more than it should be , SO THEY SHOULD STOP STEALING NOW .
It is now estamated that 35% of all americans well be in prison in there life time .. Of course there no longer work for them when they get out so they have to repeat .. So that percentage has to go up even higher . Have fun ....... There coming to your home soon .

I know about those certain things. I was a Volunteer Probation Officer in my 20's.

I also know dry humor when I see it and that was what he was doing.

come on guys, its a simple statement,, it did not read everyone CLASSIFIED as in prison is in prison,, it said everyone in prison is in prison,, which a simple TRUE statement. Its like saying all fruit is fruit and then someone argues,, well a tomatoe is a fruit but its served as a vegetable,,,,
