Manners seem to be something that is seen a little less often these days. I have no problem with maam. But I was surprised about a year and a half ago when I took the subway in Boston with my daughter looking for her wedding dress and a boy not only used the term "maam" but offered his seat to me. The seat offering is what reminded me of my age, not the term "maam", (ha).

Doesn't bother me. And I usually respond with madam or sir. Its sweet to see the kiddos puff up with pride knowing you respect them back.

It is common courtesy to refer to all bearers of the camel toe as "Ma'am" ...somehow referring to them as scurrvy slag @ssed bints was misconstrued as being less polite........so "Ma'am" it is.
