Just a rambling thought here.....but do any of you really think that we could have a president that everyone (or at least most people) liked and agreed with again? I just don't think it's possible anymore. Everyone is so polarized on everything and the politics are so over complicated.

I mean, you could say "Yeah! Maybe if we get one that isn't screwing everything up!" but that doesn't really mean anything because someone would always be against whatever policy he / she tries to put into place. Now I know it's impossible to make EVERYONE happy, but I think nowadays it's almost impossible to even make MOST of the people happy.

Personally, it would seem to me that the media has been successful in whipping both sides of every issue into a frenzy.

nah. Not until the system is reformed, but that likely won't happen.

everybody? EVERRYBODY?

Most people sure no problem - Obama has > 50% approval rating...
The polarization of our society is real within the population and
not only in Washington - but it is worse in Washington.

The Republicans and Democrats are having a ridiculous time trying
to compromise on anything and it is jeopardizing our future. Take
health care. Reform is absolutely necessary. NOW. Immediately. It
is obviously the worst waste of money in our society. Trillions
of dollars annually. There is no excuse for our health care system
costing twice as much as the French system yet providing far
inferior health care than the French system. Any idiot would
immediately adopt the French system which has the best measured
health care and one of the lowest per capita costs in the world.

Then, we could try to improve it from there.

We could cut our health care cost in HALF in one fell swoop
if we did that tomorrow. Would you like to halve your health insurance cost tomorrow while simultaneously having universal coverage for everyone and no pre-existing conditions?

So why is it so hard to do this??!!

No we never will and it probably will only get worse as time goes on.Even if it was possible to get your born and bred Americans to go alone with one party you have a huge problem getting all the immigrants from other countries to adapt to your way of thinking which is usually very different from the country they came from. You typically get around 1/3 of America that votes during a Presidential election. The chances of getting the other 2/3 to get off their lazy butts and vote is challenging enough. The chances that the other 2/3 would like your way of thinking and vote for you is nearly impossible.

I'm writing in Ralph Wiggum (from the Simpsons) for president next time

Immigration – “Stranger danger!”

Government Spending – “I only have this much moneys.”

Party Politics – “Everyone is invited to my party!”

Slogan – “I Dig the Wig”

Ethics – “I’m Ralph Wiggum and I’ve been a good boy.”

Political Appointments – Bart Simpson as the Secretary of Indian Burns and Lisa Simpson as his First Ladle

Foreign Relations – “When we’re mad we’ll use our words. Then the rest of the world will play nice with us. And the only boom-booms will be in our pants.”

Great question,, I looked this up and you are on to something EVERY president since Truman(except for Clinton) has been far less popular by the end of their term then they were at the start. Its pretty difficult to live up to ALL the expectations of a few hundred million citizens.

You forgot to mention the number of Northerners that despised him, as well.

There was a large number of people that believed they were sending their sons to die in battle, in order to free the slaves. Something they resented, because they did not necessarily believe in it.

Not all Northerners were abolishonists.

Only history would prove Lincoln to be a great president.

Hmmmmm.

The only way it happens is when a viable 3rd party can be established and force the hand of the other 2.. The other 2 work harder to crush 3rd parties than they do running against eachother.

yeah remember the Draft Riots in New York? Mobs ran through the streets lynching every black man they could find. The Navy and the Army had to be called in. The only time the US Navy shelled an American city (not in secession)

the movie "Gangs of New York" portrayed it pretty accurately

You can never please everybody. Someone will always be unhappy.
Truth be told though... government is more touchy than many subjects. The good news is, if you really don't like the american way, you can move! laugh Or, you can vote and try to change things. Or even run for office!
However, short of brainwashing everyone except the president, we will never have perfect agreement with any president. People aren't made that way!

Yes, and if we ask nicely the terrorists won't blow any more of us up. I think you are a little bit overly idealistic here... people will exploit, con, and kill each other for the stupidest of reasons. No person can change that (sans genocide). In fact, he tried to free them without a war. The war, in fact, wasn't even about the slaves. It was about part of the U.S. trying to be a seperate nation. Just my opinion and a bit of a history lesson for a bonus!
