Topic: Do we expect a lower standard from women? | |
---|---|
I have noticed that a rated "R" movie can have a fully naked woman in it. But it needs to be rated X to see a naked man. That's because censors expect less (of sexual awareness and wherewithal) of our young women in society than of young men. |

(Before you jump on me for generalizing let me just say yes, I am. For the sake of discussion I'd like to talk about the two groups collectively rather than individually. I am fully aware that there are exceptions to this notion) Do you ever notice that when you look at popular youtubers the guys are almost always funnier than the girls, and that girls generally depend on showing boobs and being beautiful for hits? Do you ever notice that it's easier for beautiful women to be "famous for nothing" while men, even attractive men, almost always have to be skilled in some area such as acting, music, wit etc in order to earn fame? Do you think Sarah Palin would be considered as qualified to be John McCain's running mate if she were a man? I guess what I'm getting at is, as a society, do people expect less from women? If so, isn't this to the detriment of the female sex? Are women in the media generally stupider and less talented than the men? take Mtv for example it's ratings were falling so they decided to start showing reality shows and thanks to Mtv,music television?we have so many reality shows. and of course women can be popular cause of their looks, and not brains or talent, because which gender of pornstars make the most money? |

Also, being arrested has nothing to do with talent/intelligence. I don't know. A really smart criminal never gets arrested. Look at George W. Bush or the Pope. |

George Bush and "intelligence" do not go into the same sentence without causing a tsunami or a major world financial meltdown, or a Hollywood actress losing all her hair and teeth overnight. So he had a different trick up his sleeve. |

I've never heard of the Jersey Shore crew.... are they as famous as the other female pseudo celebs I mentioned? It's on MTV...kind of like the Real World except it's sole purpose is to embarrass Italian Americans. I would say they are having their 15 minutes at the moment. I think they were actually on talk shows making the rounds. But men only make up half of the population. Do you think it's men who buy gossip magazines and frequent online gossip sites about paris hilton etc? If only men are interested in the female pseudo celebrities, why aren't they reported on soley in men's magazines? Most people that run gossip sites on the net are gay men. |

I guess I would have to ask who you are asking this question to --men or women. I think women hold women to a higher standard. It is not women who make other women famous just because they are beautiful. To be honest a woman could walk around me topless all day and I'm not going to do any more for her than I would if she was in a winter parka. Sarah Palin was brought in to get the woman's vote and we see how well women fell for that one. Men are not famous for just being good looking because although women appreciate the attractive guy we want more. So if you are looking for the answer it's JMO that men are the ones who will make someone famous or do that extra favor just because a woman is attractive or half dressed. But men only make up half of the population. Do you think it's men who buy gossip magazines and frequent online gossip sites about paris hilton etc? If only men are interested in the female pseudo celebrities, why aren't they reported on soley in men's magazines? Most people that run gossip sites on the net are gay men. That's a redundant statement. ALL men on the net are gay. They drink coke, they're too stupid to know what to do with the empty bottle so they just stuff it somewhere. |

To me, they seem to reflect that on average, men earn more, still. And women have the option of not working in some cases, this is usually not the case for men. There are some stay at home dads, but they are a small minority. |

It depends upon ones definition of standard. I think women are held to a much more rigid standard when it comes to beauty and selflessness.
typically, people EXPECT the woman to be perfect, female models are featured much more often than male in the media so there is intense pressure on women to look a certan way. People also EXPECT the woman to look after everyone else in her family besides herself, whereas the man is just expected, in most cases, to work(like he is expected to do when he is single). Men are held to a more rigid standard when it comes to career choice and parenthood and relationships. I think women can go into caretaking or lower paying careers without the stigma that a man faces for those same choices. I think women are given ALOT more leeway than men (to make up for the uneven expectation in responsibility, in my opinion) in parenting and because the child happens to gestate inside their wombs. I think when women kill their kids the question is asked or oonsidered how overwhelmed or ill they may have been, but a man doing the same is given no chance to rationalize it. I think when men beat up on women, women can go to the cops with little stigma and even eventually kill that man and that man is immediately demonized, whereas when a woman is beating on a man if he even strikes her, he is demonized. I think there are very clear double standards for women and men, I think some of them are reasonable and some are not. I dont know if it is a matter of an overall higher or lower standard though,,,just different. |

How do people live on that? The more I look at your picture, the more and harder I laugh. It does not stop being funny even for a moment. Especially when you talk and make statements, and carry on non-chalantly and smartly, as if the whole world did not know. It's priceless. Shows a strong character and a well-balanced woman, with the healthiest self-esteem. Well done, sister. |

It depends upon ones definition of standard. I think women are held to a much more rigid standard when it comes to beauty and selflessness. That's so easy to explain. Women are held to a rigid standard put up by men. If the women are not held to this standard, the standard would lose its rigidity. Also, if a woman is not beautiful, then no matter how close she's held to a standard, the standard won't get rigid. (I apologize MsHarmony... you set it up so beautifully. I just could not resist.) |
