Fran, how's the search going.
What D. wrote was pretty acurate, reminded me of a some humor.
When you ask a dog what time is it, they'll always reply "NOW! NOW! NOW!". Dogs are very Zen.

still looking into different breeds; narrowed it down to a beagle or a shnoodle - both great for allergies but still doing my research.

Went to my local animal shelter but truthfully do not think the employees really gave a hoot about anything I said and just wanted to move their inventory. But haven't given up hope, gonna check out a couple of other no kill shelters and like most have said I am hoping to be chosen by one myself.

There's no such thing as a hypo-allergenic dog.

Poodles, and all mixes along that lines are considered such because their curly coats are holding the dander against the skin. It's still there, but it's not falling out or being rubbed out against the person.

Both the poodle mix, and especially the beagles are high energy. The beagles are hunting dogs. They also can be noisy. Poodles were also used for hunting, though they are usually more often lap dogs. Unless you go with an older dog that's mellowed out, you'll have active pups and young dogs.

Labs - gotta be careful with them. The labs in this region have gotten snippy and mean. There's a fairly high bite problem around here due to crappy breeding practices.

How about a beagle?

I once had a beagle because it was supposed to be kid friendly. I could not potty train that dog! It even peed on my bed. Grrr.. It chewed through the electric on my outdoor A/C. It bit my child and left a scar. It chewed through the handle on my mom's leather purse.

That dog would howl at the moon. The neighbors were grateful when I got rid of it.

I love all dogs but since I live in a apt. I've a 5 yr old Pug,who is very loyal and spoil. I would like to have another Chihuahua but landlord says no.frown My daugther-in-law had a Yorkshire because she didn't shed. I think Beagles are so cute. Just take your time,When you find the right one,you will know it,for it will feel right in your heart.

If you go the rescue route, a lot of small dog rescues won't adopt their dogs to people with young children. Too many horror stories of the kids being bit by the dog, or small dogs being killed by children.

I know the couple of groups I work with absolutely refuse. They've both taken in small dogs that were injured by the owners kids and the owners didn't feel like paying the vet bill and dumped them into rescue.

^I agree with that. As a matter of fact, I don't think people with children under say 6 or 7 should have dogs because both the child and the dog are unpredictable. Children think little dogs are toys and don't know they bite until they get bitten. Dogs don't know children don't know they aren't toys and will bite them. I know this from experience as it never fails someone lets their child out of their site and the child runs over to my dog. I tell them, please don't pet the dog. Then parent gets upset cause they think I'm being mean to their child for not letting it pet my dog. I actually had an argument with a woman once because of it. Now everytime I see the woman, she keeps her eyes to the ground when she passes me. It's hilarious actually.

I am looking to get a pet finally, want a dog. Don't want a pocketbook dog, don't want a huge one either.

Prefer dog to be mild mannered and social.

Any suggestions?

Am looking into an American bulldog/boxer mix - any advice?

Want something Impressive, yet cheap, that will bond to you and most folks will just shy away from???

LOOK DEEP into the eyes of a GOAT...

Goats eat weeds, Grass Hay, if you leave The Horns on, they will be very impressive...

If the Lady Next Door is always callig the cop on you, just walk your Goat over there and let it eat her Rose Bush all the way down to the Ground...

Go a head let The Cops prove that case...

Goats do everything that a dog will do, but in most cases, the Goat will end up costing you about 1 tenth of what a dog will cost you and you can fire Paco The Gardener...

I think it all boils down to a dogs training as well. Sure, some things are inherent in certain breeds, but even that isn't always true.

Your talk of the schnoodle reminded me of a cockapoo we had long ago. He was jet black and we named him Satchmo. He was a good dog.

Good luck Fran!

I have had good luck with my first and only dog ever~a Miniature Schnauzer. Doesn't shed, woo-woo's at strangers, easy to train. A little stubborn but so am I. And he thinks I'm adorable even in the morning.

hey that brings up a subject...the goat reference..about eating roses...

if u have a pitbull, the neighbor might not like it, like my german neighbor, mrs. imwamotez, the old geezer next door, and the jehovah witness construction company.

my dog did not eat roses, but she did squeeze between the pickets they said.....and wander into the neighbors garage where she charged them they said...while looking 4 goodies.
well she does jump at you when she barks...they called animal control who tried to feed me some bs about pitbulls. they tazered my dog, and caused her serious emotional stress, and me 2. later that summer, mrs. iwamotez and her family had a bbq where they were outside yelling "we don't like u, and we don't like ur dogs". i have news for them, and my pb can smell this german and does not like her...either.

from there, the old geezer next door got into it because he had an ankle biter, and he was really after my dobie who he thought was a beautiful dog, well he was until he went after the Tacoma Public Utilities field supervisor..but that is a much different story. the ankle biter died, and someone tried to get into my house several times to get the dobie, but he liked it there, and refused to leave so the old geezer, andy a. did not get him. sorry andy.

from there the JH construction company then jumped on the bandwagon, and tried to tell me my pitbull escaped again but was behind their garage. however, it was not my pitbull but a close resembling pup, and so i said i would get the dog and take it to the local pitbull rescue around the corner. PITBULL RESCUE they screamed?????? i said yes, a local drug addict family had a pitbull rescue going on cause the local police had just busted in and got their 3....and put them to sleep.

what i am trying to relate to you is that maybe it is better to go buy a goat that eats roses. no matter what kind of dog you get there is always some kind of condition that goes with each breed of dog.
keep shopping. buying a dog is kind of like buying a car.
if u r an endurance runner, u don't want a slow moving low to the ground, basset hound.
on the other hand, if u r an old lady, no need for a greyhound that chases foxes.
and if u r a high energy person, u certainly don't want a lazy sit by the fire old geriatric hound that u have rescued ready 2 kick it.

i don't know if this makes any sense. if the dog likes 2 bite, u have yourself a potential lawsuit. how would i know? um well once a first bite comes the second.
zorro waits for the TPU man every day now. woohoo i say.
these r a few of my dog comments 4 what they r worth.noway

Ummm, people steal goats and eat them. At least in this area of Texas...

Pitties and small dogs tend to be stolen for fighting and bait.
