Topic: Believing what people say.

Someone's comment in another thread made me think about this. How much of what people say here do you believe or don't believe? What makes you believe them or not believe them? Do you assume everyone is truthful or lying?

I'm not asking for advice on how to figure out what to believe. I am asking what other people think.

I believe everything everyone says here as the truth.

I only truly believe a portion of what is said online, the optimist in me makes me want to believe a drop of what is being said is the truth or is about something true, add a drop of exaggeration, add another drop of b.s., and blend all together.

is there another option: that i don't really care whether anyone speaks the truth or not since they matter nothing to me?

sometimes i laugh at what is said
sometimes i believe it
sometimes i'm shocked

but mostly i skim over what's written, unless it's a person whose comments i value.

you look very pretty in your new photo by the way flowerforyou (totally truthful comment)

Depends on who it is.

There are people here who I feel very comfortable believing pretty much whatever they say. Usually it's because it's someone I've known here for a long time; in some cases, it's someone I've communicated with on the phone or in other ways.

Consistency over time is a tremendous indicator, although certainly not an absolute.

Other people, I basically just dismiss everything they say as unmitigated hogwash.

Thank you!

And no, you don't have to care if people are being truthful or not .

Lex, I agree. It usually depends on who is saying what. Some people, I believe what they say, others not so much.

It depends on how well I have gotten to know the person or how familiar I am with their posts and what the thread is about. Aside form the obvious, shall we say - show offs and just plain nut cases...I think most of us are as honest here as we are in life off of here. Not a very informative answer as I read it over - how in the world do we know who is honest in their not Migle2 lives!

I believe what I hear on NPR. But, other than that, I don't believe anything until I've heard it three times. And then only maybe.

What does that include? What people say? Information you read? Anything? Everything? So basically, you just assume everything is a lie?

Ah, so you don't believe everyone until you meet them face to face? What about those who lie in real life as well?

It's easier to tell a liar in real life especially as you get to know them better, the inconsistencies, the body and facial language...Liars tend to give themselves away.
