I know for a fact that my machine does a good job running AutoCAD under Windows XP-- and that a Mac without possibly schitzy virtual machine software can't.

That's NOT a Mac issue. That's a AutoCAD issue - Doh!!! whoa

Whatever. Since none of the major CAD packages have a Mac version, it will always be a smarter move to buy a machine that runs the software without bolting training wheels on it. The price of the software can run as high as 10 times the cost of the computer it runs on. It would be like using the claw portion of a hammer to drive screws- sure, it can be done, but it would annoy the crap out of the person stuck doing it. Especially when screwdrivers are plentiful and cheap.

Sometimes, the most elegant tool for the job is the one that gets rubber hitting the road with the least amount of grief. And in the case of CAD, that ISN'T spelled M-A-C. The Engineering group at our company probably has over a century of CAD and design experience in the aggregate and none of us would choose a Mac to run CAD. That said, we all have a Mac sitting on our credenzas to run the Manufacturing software for entering Bills of Material, checking for parts, looking up Sales Orders, etc., because THAT is the machine the software was written for. We used to be able to run it as a client on our PCs, but when the Manufacturing side upgraded to OS-X, OS-X broke the client.

Enough with the Mac evangelizing already! The Mac is never going to be all things to all people. Accept it and stop getting all haughty with people who have different experiences from yours. Because that's what this thread is all about-- peoples' experiences.

The Mac is never going to be all things to all people.
Of course not.... just the people who on a daily basis are smart enough not to deal with winblows viruses... spyware... poor security... defragging... rootkits... you get the idea. But hey, since you're stuck with a peecee because you're using one specific software that costs more than most peoples whole computers do, it sounds more like you have Mac envy than anything  Like I said, that's NOT a Mac issue. That's a AutoCAD issue, they made the choice not to support both platforms. Deal with it dude laugh I agree with you though that if for some ungodly known reason someone is stuck with using that software, then they're also stuck with a peecee. Fortunately, 99.9% of the rest of the population doesn't have your problem, and they gladly choose Macs.

Enjoy your peecee flowers

it will always be a smarter move to buy a machine that runs the software without bolting training wheels on it.

Are you trying to convince us - or yourself? In case you didn't know, vista runs better on a Mac than it does on a peecee. Weird. So much for your "training wheel" theory

Just as debating with religious fundamentalists, responding to this sort demeaning post would serve no useful purpose. You're a True Believer whose world view can accept no others' experiences--your mind can't possibly be changed by debate or alternative ways and means, even by people with EE degrees who are obviously using THe Great Satan everyday to make their company millions of dollars without all the calamaties you posit . Ergo, no point in getting in a pi@@ing match with you.

Have a nice day, sir. And enjoy your Mac.

I use both, and I make lots of money off of people like you stuck using a peecee, so by all means, use one laugh As far as 'experiences' go, I believe I already addressed that, but because you are in peecee fanboy mode it (of course) went right over your head. By far the majority of people don't need to use AutoCAD (or could even afford it) so your point about peecee's is moot. ,,,and your deafening silence about how windows runs better on a Mac than on a peecee is noted, so yes, I WILL enjoy using Mac computers because you take them out of the box, plug them in, turn them on, and day after day, month after month, year after year, they just work... with NONE of the nonsense that peecee users have to deal with drinker

I think I'm going to start calling this peecee Beelzebub. Oh, and my AutoCAD workstation at work? Typhoid Mary. :)
