Topic: ARE WIT AND INTELLIGENCE RELATED? | |
---|---|
Is wit linked to intelligence... Is a 'quick - witted' person necessarily an intelligent one? What are your thoughts? |
You will have to get back to me on that one I am kind of
slow. |
Wit is just a subconscious defense to being insulted, whereas
intelligence is someone who has allot of knowledge |
Not necessarily-
intelligence is having good understanding or a high mental capacity, quick to comprehend- wit is to know. |
having a high mental capacity is exactly that, intelligence is whether
or not you USE that capacity. |
I do not think wit has alot to do with necessarily insulting someone or
something. mho. |
usually someone is deemed 'witty' when they can come up with a retort to
some sort of insult. It's usually a pre-rehearsed saying or quip that their subconscious recalls and their conscious mind verbalizes, in my experience anyway. |
definition of wit is to know
to know what?
eryc that could be a retorical debate...
perhaps. just a thought. |
lol thats partially the point, it's keeping my mind off of crap atm :P
IMHO, wit is having the capacity to se the humor in a given situation
and verbalize this adroitly, frequently in a tongue and cheek fashion; this can be a component of overall intelligence or not, depending upon the individual. I have known quick witted individuals who weren't necessarily Mensa material and Mensa types who weren't exactly the wittiest people. I also know two people who fit into both categories quite well, these are two of my oldest friends and all-time favorite people. |
FINALLY an actual definition.
YES, they are related....
I've seen too many people that are super intelligent that have ZERO common sense (like opening their mouth to the wrong person) where a quick witted person usually can get themselves out of the situation...lol ...Sometimes Intelligence is just knowing when to keep your mouth shut |
remember, a wise man is one who listens.
Wit is not necessarily sarcasm. Johnny Carson, Mark Twain, for example
had fantastic wit. Wit is being able to "catch" what someone says. Wit is being able to respond quickly. Wit is being able to banter. None of this needs to be sarcastic. Most of the time it's extremely funny, and I appreciate anyone who has that talent. One can be very well educated and have the wit of a carton of yogurt. To be witty is to be intelligent. |
Meaning..
Power of combining perception with clever expression. Does that mean it's a negative? I dont believe so. Perhaps it is someones perception to say wit is sarcastic, replies? just a thought |
it doesnt have to be negative, but in today's society, it usually is i
think.. |
hmmmmmmm
so that is your opine eryc? I dont know if all of society feels that way. |
naturally, it's my opinion, i said it :P
