Oh, I think I get it know.

LadyLid, I wonder if you thought this comment:

Also, mis-representing the story to get better page hits on your blog is ALSO WRONG.

was related to you starting this thread. It was absolutely not - you started this thread based on the information that was available to you. I think this is a very important thread - this is a hugely important issue.

My statement above was intended as a criticism of many bloggers. We are in a transitional state, with more and more people getting their news online, and the standard of accuracy in the 'news' is suffering.

Yes...I did think that was directed at me..hence the bite me remark. Oh the beautiful thing about communicating via the internet..no clarity, no facial expression, no voice inflection.

I will still disagree about the parents fault...as a single mom I am quite sure my boys have done things they shouldn't have when I wasn't around, when I was doing things like ummm working. I am very grateful to have good kids..not out drinking, smoking pot, committing crimes...as far as I know.
There is not enough information about this girls parents to judge them...

My interest was how many would step up and risk an azz whooping to help her..I know I would have.

Since multiple threads on the same topic are discouraged, I would like to piggy-back on your thread and ask Why did this happen and what can we do to prevent it? Some people are blaming pornography. Some are blaming the internet era. Some are blaming a continued decline in 'good parenting'. Some are blaming all cultural influences that 'devalue women', including some elements of hispanic culture.

Gang rape is a term for being raped by a gang of people..does not have to mean they were part of a "gang".

You are definitely correct, both situations (a gang, or a collection of separate idiots) can be called a 'gang rape', but the way the term is being used by the media, it paints a very different picture than what happened.

Those individuals should be held individually responsible for their stupidly and callous disregard.

I apologize for the "bite me" remark...

Thank you. Please know that my desire for drunks to be held accountable for drunkenness (only!) does NOT reduce my desire for rapist to be held accountable for raping.

I just don't want to argue the details...

Its looking to me now like, on the whole, you had more of the details right than I did, at the beginning.

again, just wondering how many actually would risk themselves if this was not their own child.

The last time I saw a girl getting hit, I didn't even think about it, I ran over to wedge myself between the 6'6" mexican assailant and the girl. One of his three huge cousins blocked me and attacked me. Strategically, getting my *** kicked seemed a near certainty. Apparently the little 120lb geeky asian guy I had been talking to followed me, and a group of passers-by followed him. Eventually we heard sirens, and the mexican guys (who were helping the guy who was hitting the girl) took off running. The girl was mostly unharmed. The asian guy was bloodied up.

The cops chewed me out for getting involved, but considering how long it took them to get there, I wasn't convinced their advice was sound.

I had not heard about this, so after reading your post I researched it before adding something here.

Absolutely one of the most horrific things I have ever heard of.

From what I just read, it seems there may have even been 'bystanders' taking pictures and videos. That is unbelievable to me...

I've been involved in several situations in my life where I stepped in to a situation where others ignored what was going on. In those moments, honestly, I never even had time to 'think' about what was going on....only react. Each time afterwards I would be amazed at how many just did nothing....and then had no real reason as to why afterwards.

To take pictures/videos brings all that to a whole new level...call me overly-strict, whatever...EVERY PERSON who stood there and did NOTHING actually did something by that. They helped to contribute to what will probably be the most painful night of this young girl's life...and could possibly ruin her future. I hope it doesn't... - and any guilt/shame they have to live with they deserve...

It's just so sad... - I'll never understand the evil in people.

To take pictures/videos brings all that to a whole new level...

Totally. That and the 'two hours'. I'm sympathetic to people who 'lock up' and don't know what to do during a sudden emergency; but to willfully shoot videos...and to let it go for two hours...this is sick.

I'm not sympathetic at all to those who 'lock up' in situations like that. Shouldn't just an instinct to help a fellow human being out kick in -- in all of us???

To ignore someone being hurt or a tragedy unfolding in front of you out of fear or what may happen to you during or after - to me, that's just someone who is a coward and weak. & truly, I will never understand that mind-set.

A 15 year old girl leaves her Homecoming dance at 9:00 PM to meet her
father outside the school for a ride home. A "friend" leads her to a
dark area of the school where she is met by a group of boys who are
drinking and she is beaten and repeatedly raped for over 2 hours.

This in itself is very disturbing....police say there were up to 12 who
saw this happening during the two and a half hour period.

No one stepped in, no 911 calls, no one went and told any teachers,
anyone, or any of the security guards that are present because the school
has to hire such guards because of the violence in their school.

This is a high school in Richmond California.

Would you step in and help? Would you risk getting your azz kicked
by intervening on her behalf? Would you at least make the 911 call?

I am shocked by the crime..even more that NO ONE helped!

This is the reason I left California. Nobody cares. Of course i would intervene! Nobody deserves that kind of treatment. If i had the ability i would make the individuals involved pay the ultimate price. They don't deserve what they have if that is what they do with it.

i'm not the type to keep my mouth shut...but i remember how many high-schoolers can be. i hope they've all learned a valuable life-lesson, and maybe they'll grow into better adults.

-------------------------------

when my sister was nine, she was fed a ton of alcohol and gang-raped in the park by teenagers. one of them was my boyfriend's brother.

one of my best friends found her discarded in a ditch and called an ambulance...he performed CPR and kept her alive until they could get her.

nobody helped her, other than him. nobody did a ****ing thing.

they got off with military school because with the level of alcohol they fed her, she became an "unreliable witness".

i hope they became decent people. she sure had a hard road of it.

I struggle to believe that somebody who can do such vile deeds will grow up into a decent person.

so do i. but i know that change is possible.

i can only speak for myself, but i wasn't a decent person as a teenager. obviously, neither were they. i like to think i turned out okay.

I heard that in every 7 minutes a woman is being raped. Out of those raped many don't report them! If this is true we surely have some morale issues to work on.

It is very sad indeed.

The agressors should be put in prison for a minimum of 25 years and the ones who stood by like perverts watching and doing nothing a minimum of 10 years.

No matter that they are minors they all new what the hell they were doing and what the others were doing (for the spectators).

It makes me sick to hear that, it seems that no one takes responsabilties for anything and think silence is the golden rule.

How can you live with yourself by standing there and doing nothing who cares if you get beaten up it's a lot better then living with the guilt of doing nothing, unless they like what they were watching if so they are as guilty as the agressors.

But why should they be tossed in jail?! Rapists have such a low percentage of rehab, why don't we just put them down?! She might be alive, but the rest of her life is screwed.

I guarantee, there'd be no one left if something like that happened to me. Dad and brother would quietly go a'hunting!

This is why the death penalty needs to be used.

sorry if you misread my statement..i wasn't laughing at the fact that a girl was raped. I just find humor that those that vote republican seem to call people of my religion uncivilized when stuff like this happens every 7 seconds according to the UN in America.

I didn't misread your statement. My reply stands to your previous post. Do you honestly think us conservatives don't see anything wrong with this? Hell I'd rather see them shot to rid this earth of the vile evil thing they did to this poor girl. The UN? Like I trust or believe the frickin' UN, nothing but a bunch of American haters.

Your statement is inaccurate and wrong. What they did was vile and what terrorists do is vile. Violence does not have a face, a race, or political affiliation. frustrated

You are correct. There are just as many Democrats as Republicans who view many of the traditional Islamic punishments as barbaric. What is truly vile is to compare what some sick teenagers did, who may someday grow up to regret what they have done, to adult, carefully thought out behaviour, and then laugh about it for political purposes.

I'm handy with what is around me, I'm sure I could find a stick...and I absolutely hate rapists, with that combination...who needs a trial and jury.

In this case,I think the best thing to do is call 911, it really wont help that person for both of you to be assaulted or dead. After that, it may not be a bad idea, if you can, to record it. It could serve as VALUABLE evidence for the justice system later on in the process.

If it is a case where the odds are more reasonable that you can survive physical intervention to get yourself AND the other person out safely, I say go for it.

trying not too, defending myself against someone that clearly has a hatred for some of us. It has NOTHING to do with politics, it has EVERYTHING to do with evil pigs that committed a horrendous crime.

I pray they are punished to the fullest extent, what they did is despicable and should not be tolerated.

As far as some watching and taking pictures, I hope they will be haunted the rest of their lives just like this girl will be haunted.
