Glad to hear this, I don't think this country can afford this, right now.

ESPECIALLY in Chicago.

Great!
There were many concerns from homeowners being forced to abandon their homes.

let's see, investment in infrastructure creating jobs and reclaiming old land/brownscape and turning it into productive use...

increasing tourism...

marketing for a major US city for the next 6 years...

do I go on?...

yeah, surely the country couldnt afford an economic opportunity like this one *sigh*...

you have to spend money, to make money....

isolationism does not work.

I listened this morning to concerned homeowners who would be displaced.
That's enough for me to say it's not a good idea.

Just my opinion, but if Chicago is as controled as it seems, the cost overruns, delays, etc.??

If the project wasn't completed as started, we would look REALLY bad in the world's eyes.

I remember all the problems with the winter olympics, in Tahoe.
Cost overruns were very excessive.
Just don't think we need this in the US, right now.

In this country, viewership of the olympics is too low to justify the costs. You're right that isolationism doesn't work, tho. Deregulation and free trade FTW! drinker

Actually name more than 1 that made a profit. Every city loses money when it comes to the olympics.

I tend to agree with this, especially in light of folks having to be displaced. Our present economy has already 'displaced' enough folks.

But even if it were held in the states, my first thought was WHY Chicago of all places?!

While it would have been pretty darn cool to have the opportunity to go, I tend to agree also that it just isn't good timing.

Take it as an opinion, but somehow I feel like this is sort of a form of boycott of USA by other countries. You don't have to believe it but that's what I think.

Let's see... how about the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, where 11 Israeli athletes were massacred by Palestinian terrorists... ??? not exactly the best Olympics experience to remember there...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munich_massacre

In my opinion, the "Olympics" is a major waste of human and natural resources...

... meanwhile, as the hoopla continues, people are starving all over the globe... take the billions spent on this worthless bit of entertainment-itis and do something positive instead of wasteful.

Not like there isn't enough worthless sports entertainment on the globe already...

Since when have bring an event that big to a US city a bad idea? Is when Obama took office? Some people are really discussing. You would rather see the USA fail in anything because of who is in office. I have never known a true American wish such on his or her country. I think these people have a personal issue with our President and could care less about our country, just as long as he fails, they are no better (well a lot worse) then the communist. People like that are the sickening, vile, diseased maggots that need to be exterminated.
