system? It's not YOUR money! Remember? You have the privilege of working
your ass off for it and the government gets to decide what to do with
it. It's like being married but without the sex.grumble grumble

i'm leaning in favor of the new bill...because it's better than nothing.
it's NOT perfect, but a step towards some sort of compromise. yes, i'm
in favor of immigration.

illegal immigrants DO pay taxes...sales tax, income tax, gas tax...and
since they often use fake social security numbers, the taxes that they
DO pay in they are not eligible to reclaim. they won't be drawing
social security when they retire, for fear of being exposed.

they are damned hard workers, and a benefit to our communities...people
damn them because they are illegal, but so are the drug-users, aye?

Well said, Lulu, about the immigrant workers (legal or not). The bill
just leaves me confused and I have not been able to make any
recommendations. Maybe it will help, that is everyone's hopes, but it
has a bunch of stuff squirreled away in it that made me pause.

Thank you Lulu. I'm also glad of being here.
Without us you people won't have:
Beautiful gardens in towns and cities.
All the new subdivisions and house that are being developed.
Fruit and vegetables at reasonable prices.
Clean hotel bedrooms.
Etc.

If "legal" workers were doing the job they were getting paid regular
wages which would make the prices way more expensives.
However, I agree with the fact that there must be some control on who
enters the country we are good enough with the american criminals to let
in foreign criminal, as is the case of the gangs on east LA.
I also agree with the fact that if I come here Legal or Ilegal I have to
be able to speak English regardless.

Regards.

i disagree with you on the language, miguel...but that's about it. this
country has always had many languages spoken, from polish to german to
english...to what-have-you.

we have no national language.

Excerpt from Senate floor statement by Senator Sessions, Al.

"It is clear the people who drafted this legislation had an agenda and
the agenda was not to meet the expectations of the American people. The
agenda was to create a facade and appearance of enforcement, an
appearance of toughness in some instances. When you get into the meat of
the provisions and get into the bill and study it, tucked away here and
there are laws that eviscerate and eliminate the real effectiveness of
those provisions. It was carefully done and deliberately done. This is a
bill that should not become law. It is a bill that will come back to be
an embarrassment to our Members who have supported it. I wish it were
not so. I know how these things happen. You do not always have time to
do everything you want to do. You try to do something you think is
right, but ultimately in a bill as important as this one that has
tremendous impact on the future of our country and our legal system and
our commitment to the rule of law, we ought to get it right. We ought
not to let this one slide by. It is not acceptable to say, let's just
pass something and we will send it to the House and maybe the House of
Representatives will stand up and stop it and fix it. That is not
acceptable for the great Senate of the United States.

I strongly believe we are not ready to pass the bill. We are not ready
to give it final consideration. I strongly believe it is a horrendous
violation of the Committee on the Budget and that it is, as Mr. Rector
said, a fiscal catastrophe if passed, and as such we ought not to waive
the Budget Act but pull the bill from the floor and fix it."

In N. C., I worked years ago to get legislation passed called work
first. It eliminated Single parents from drawing welfare for an extended
(life) periods of time. It gives a person with a child 2 yrs to find a
job and then whether they have or not, they are no longer allowed to
draw free housing or AFDC. It also placed a limit on the number of
children it would pay for.(2) Its tough, but it provides money for
career training and job placement. Many, some of them my family have had
to comply with these laws (rules), but it has stopped lifelong drains on
the system and unlimited births by women who have no means to support 1
child let alone 4, and 5.
Yet people still find a way to abuse the system. My niece(one of them)
figured out when they were going to cut her off, and she (out of
laziness) had not taken advantage of the free education provided she
could simply get pregnant again, and draw welfare for an additional 2
years. That is the reasons for a limit on the number of childre per
receipient. Amazing how people still find a way to abuse the system.
However, the system is saving tax payers millions, even with the costs
in education benefits. So you see, I do realize we have internal
problems, and I do not just pick on Illegal immigration. I have been
involved in politics for years. I look for solutions, and am not driven
by some sort of revenge or prejudice agenda. Real solutions to real
problems!
I was so hoping we could put the immigration issue beind us. My next
fight will be reduction in carbon emissions, and a drive towards
hydrogen powered automobiles. (Energy independence, pollution control,
and a stop to the wars that result)

so what happens when a mother gives birth to a special-needs child, and
the father leaves? the amount of money it costs to pay qualified care
for a special child...is the salary one could earn, not to mention the
amount of time off for sickness, etcetera.

there needs to be leeway to account for individual cases. as humans, we
are too diverse to be boxed so neatly.

There are special provisions, Lulu, we are not uncaring people. The
legislation addresses abuses by people. For example, a woman I knew
decided she needed more money for her own needs, " Im having this shunt
removed from my arm so I can get pregnant again and get a bigger check."
Those were her words. Another, "I have raised my children and my grand
children on welfare, I think they should leave it alone. It is good the
way it is." She was complaining about the legislation when it was being
suggested. She was unaware, that her point was the exact reasons for the
legislation. Welfare is a good thing, it has a noble purpose, the abuses
are ridiculous though and there was the problem. The examples you listed
are what it is there for, but they were (we fixed it) the minority of
the costs associated. By eliminating the abuses there is more money to
better help the ones it was designed to help. It is such a successful
program that now public housing is being sold, with no money down, rent
to own to the people that for years lived there for free.
Like this immigration bill, it initially had problems (they have been
addressed as they appear) and it was resisted by many, many, people,
that could not grasp the good of it! It does not leave behind anyone!!

Lonely Walker,
you said:

I read a story written by a Hispanic man that grew up in the US that
said that same thing. Its packed away with my books from last semester.
(I really need more book shelves) I cant remember his name, but it was a
good story by someone like your self who has had to live in a multi
language society. Have you read it?

An example in an English Text book, but he is a writer that has written
many books. Born in SF to Mexican immigrant parents!!!

Illegal workers pay taxes and social security?? LMAO!!
when employers HIRE an ILLEGAL they are NOT paying taxes or SS.
This is exactly what is getting these EMPLOYERS INTO SO MUCH TROUBLE. NO
TAXES OR SS BEING PAID by these ILLEGALS who are stealing the JOBS from
MILLIONS OF LEGAL AMERICANS. Sorry but thats rubbish. Just my honest
OPINION and of course THE TRUTH.flowerforyou

Barbie,
did you read the Q&A that I posted. It is written in Layman terms, and
might help you to understand the bill before the Senate now. There are
provision in the bill that are hard to understand, but the Q&A addresses
many of the questions people like me and you have about it!

You should read them and see if the questions you have are answered in
them. then decide if you will support the bill, or risk losing all
chance of a solution to your liking, and later we can work to address
the finer points!!!
