Topic: Truth versus lying

Before anyone jumps all over me again, realize that I am new to this and a little patience goes a long way. This is the last topic I would like opinions on today. Should we be COMPLETELY honest even if you risk hurting the other person? If they ask for the truth, is it okay to tell a little white lie? Or not?

I have a very different view to most of the general consensus here.

TELL ALL OF THE TRUTH...no omissions, no little white lies, no half truth...the complete stripped to the bone, real and raw, brutal truth...at all times.

That's how trust grows...trust that you are who you say you are....and from that respect grows.

I agree. being truthful doesn't have to mean being nasty. you can be blunt and use tact as well

Depends on what the little white lie is. If they ask you how they look, and even if you don't care for the way they fixed there hair or the shirt they have on, it's good to say they look great anyway. If they backed the car into the garage and you're mad as hell, but seeing how upset they already are, you say don't worry, it can be fixed, that's ok. Lying in general, especially if it's important, definately not.

I always say, "if you tell me the truth, no matter how bad it is, we can somehow work it out. But if you lie to me, no more talking, and i'll be walking".
And I live by that rule!

Exactly. Lies always come back around, and make things so much worse. You have to trust the other person to accept the fact that in lieu of hurting you and lying to you, they had enough caring and respect for you to tell you the truth, come what may.

The tent-maker Ribonatieff went to the rabbi Zlot and asked him the same question.

The rabbi was preparing to start to make his daily kishka, and had his sleeves turned up.

He looked at the man, and asked him, "Would it make any difference if you took the truth and mistook it for a lie, or if you understood a lie falsely as a truth?"

The man thought about it and thanked the rabbi for his kind and well-reasoned answer and went back to his wife because Shabboth was fast apporaching.

Never lie.

One of the greatest "white" lies I hate is the lies women tell other women about how they look. A woman will let another woman walk around looking absolutely horrenduous and just talk about her behind her back but to her face will tell her she looks good.

It is better to tell people the truth, you do not have to be mean about it but the truth is always better.

A lie is a lie is a lie......There are very gentle and loving ways to tell someone the truth. It is so important not to allow this to happen in that eventully it gets out of control and someone gets hurt.
