NEW YORK -- A spokeswoman for John Hughes says the director of 1980s coming-of-age films like "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" has died in Manhattan.

Michelle Bega says the 59-year-old Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk. He was in Manhattan to visit family.

He made a teen star of Molly Ringwald with 1984's "Sixteen Candles" about a girl's nightmarish birthday on the eve of her sister's wedding.

Ringwald also starred in "The Breakfast Club," about a group of high school misfits during Saturday detention, and "Pretty in Pink".

Hughes also directed "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and wrote "Home Alone." He lived in Illinois and set many of his films in the Chicago area.

'Planes,Trains And Automobiles' is a classic. His 'brat pack' movies and the 'Home Alone' films are awful cinema. Sad to hear about his passing, but he was far from a cinematic artist. be seeing you

I can't agree with that. If you don't like his movies, fine, but John Hughes is synonymous with 80's film making. Sure, its not exactly a renaissance of the human spirit... But his movies helped define the teen movie genre and many of those movies are still relevant today.

With all due respect,I disagree. His sugar-coated teen films do not compare to such 80s teen classics with substance such as,Rivers Edge,Stand By Me,Lucas and Say Anything. be seeing you

With all due respect. You mentioned a film about a dead girl that took place in my town - Rivers Edge. A story about boys trying to find a dead body. A good film about a scrawny wimp who makes Varsity. And someone that gets close to stalking mode...lol

JH's films were a little different

Trying to compare John Hughes films with the ones you listed is ridiculous. They're different types of films. Personally I enjoy both types of films...but your comment is like comparing 2001 with Flash Gordon '80.

Exactly my point. His films were sugar-coated. A light-hearted film I did like,Better Off Dead,is far better than any of the John Hughes teen fims. be seeing you

He had some really entertaining movies. Because appeal to broader audience doesn't mean he wasn't a great writer and director, I laughed alot esp. planes trains and automobiles. You're going the wrong way~@! How does he know where were going..prolly will be more remembered as a screen writer than director though
