Very strong community in Iceland.

May the Norse Gods endure and may Odin as of his son Thor guide the light to safety. drinker

"As we passed the Bridge of Brodgar, we could dimly descry the Standing Stones o' Stenness on the eminence but today looming in the darkness like a regiment of grim spectres. As we approached the Stone of Odin, it appeared to be larger and more unshapely than usual and all the ghastly traditions surrounding it flashed through my mind."

Umm, no. Animism and shamanism would be older and then everything branched from there with a strong matriarchal/goddess worship before being subsumed under patriarchal view.

This is my understanding as well. And it's been pretty well documented via cave art basically to the dawn of mankind.

Something as sophisticated as a patriarchal pantheon most certainly didn't come into being until much later.

I have a very close friend who is Asatru. She is devoted to Odin. I believe she actually went through a painful ritual to dedicate herself completely to him. I don't know much about this Norse religion, but there a lot of followers.

Being eclectic, I have Gods and Goddesses from all over come to teach me. Usually I'll dream with animals as the main teachers, as I am more open-minded towards their lessons. About 2 years ago, Freya and Boar came on Samhain night, along with 4 others. It's been interesting, since then.

best for everyone ...not quite, best for all our Celt-o-Germanic brothers and sister absolutely as this is the soul of our people our spiritual inheritance, the collective wisdom and world view of or ancestors over thousands of years. it its our native and folk tradition before the invasion of a alien religion that through a bloody militant/political campaign forced the conversion of our ancestors. it is a faith of pride, strength, and honor. we abide by the nine noble virtues: courage, truth, honor, fidelity, discipline, hospitality,Industriousness, Self Reliance,Perseverance

thank you for the welcome and no problem i love to share any and all knowledge about my peoples faith, and when i can set the record straight on certain topics. for example we are often accused of being racists and white supremacists, this is simply not true although exclusive to thoes that have northern European ancestry we do not support the hatred of any people. ALL folk traditions are exclusive as they are directly related to a certain people hents "folk", just as Shinto is for Japanese only for example.but anyway i dont want to get into a huge political debate, simply put its about heritage not hate. actually if you you-tube "interview with a gothi" you will get a rather good (and lengthy) breakdown of Asatru/Odinisum from the head of the Odinic rite out of London. i my self aspire to become Gothi. btw a Gothi is like an Asatru holy-man or Reverend.figured id best explain as not everybody is familiar with the term. but it is getting late her in northern Ontario the clock says 3am so i should probably get some sleep gotta get up with my wee lad in the morn. hail to you all and may the gods of the north see fit to place you in their favor

there are gods and spirits so old that they are un-named, as they stem from before the ice ages, as their reign was all but erased by the sweeping ice floes, and the great cities crushed as well, under two miles of sheer glacier. if in doubt. for comparisson, our modern buildings like the sears tower is a little over 1300 feet high, while the ice, over 10,000 feet in some places. nothing much stood a chance obviously. there are a few relics left that have been found in the last few years to support these facts.

does it really matter? it's about what works for you, not what others force you to believe......

although i'm from ancient nordic ancestory,
i believe in MR. HANKY the Cristmas Poo.

Damn.

Someone had better wake up the pharaohs and tell them that the religion they practiced up to 5,000 years ago wasn't a religion.

If you are speaking of the religion of the Norse, it is a johnny-come-lately compared to other pagan faiths. The Norns are based on the Greek Moirae and Odin and Thor are like many thunder gods who preceded them.

Really, learn some history, dude!

i dont know about the norns being based off of the 3 fates from greek myth and all that, but yes they did come around about the same time, but i think a few of the posts on this thread have got'n off track, i am an odinist, and i am looking for like minded people, friend me, message me, the odinic beleafe may not be the oldest religon, but its close, odinism does have animilism in it, havent any of you herd of the battlerage that odin would bestowe upon you and the spirit of the bear would take over, the shamans of owr ancestors would be taken over by many difrent animal spirits like ravens, bears and wolf's, insted of nit picking each others posts, we should strive to inliten owr kinsmen and kinswomen.

i am waotan, a godi from oregon, i have walked with odin and thor on the plain of the out mind, in the astral plain of existance, freya has appeared to me in moments of great passtion, tyr the one handed has given me strength and odin the one eyed has granted me victory in strugles that i saw no way out but to fight, and though i may die, at least it will be on my feet, sword and sheild in hand metoforicly speeking, its not like we have a church or temple to go and inturact with each other, we need to stick together, remember the main teachings of odin.

care for your children above all else, they are your most direct legacy to the future.
care for your family next, your spouse, brothes sisters and especially your parents.
tend to you uncles, aunts and cousins.
be certain to help your good friends also, for they may be closer than your own blood kin.
if you have any energy left over after all this, then perhaps you can consider saveing the world, be versatile.

and here is one to grow on from robert heinlein

human beings should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. specialization is for insects.

in other words, be selfreliant.

and in closeing to my kins people, may odin give you knowledge of your path, may thor grant you strength and courage on your way, and may loki give you laughter as you go.
