Ha, ha, I am smiling at this as I know that many Americans would be appalled at this. And I can understand why, it does sound extreme, doesn't it? In more ways then one....I'm sure their intentions were meant good by doing that. But...........they did not put enough thought into it like you said what about the elderly or the ones that are bed ridding, handicap that can not in fact get out much guess they expect them to read if they can. With my kids I did not buy all the video game equipment therefore they did tend to go outside more. It comes down to what we put before them as parents where they tend to put there minds at. I mean we had movies and some indoor games but as well had all the outside stuff to they enjoyed. We are a very family oriented country. Most families, have fathers that come home for lunch everyday, the children are home from school earlier and usually the main meal is eaten at lunchtime, 'functional families' is the term I believe. No, perhaps they have not covered the whole of the people and that in itself seems unfair, but then there are areas where it is rare that elderly people are totally alone here, as families tend to live with each other. And let's face it, there are plenty of other things to do, indoors. I know one mother who allows her children an hour of TV every week, and they are always busy, they make lots of craft work, garden, cook, play games with each other. |

 seems like the government has "good intentions" but it's kind of showing a bit of communism to Agreed...but unfortunately, at least from what I see, if the TV was turned off, there's always the XBox & other games...or playing around on the computer...a lot of kids these days don't KNOW HOW to play outside! You could give them a ball, a kite, & a paper airplane & they'd STILL be looking for the remote control... But I'm not gonna just blame it on lazy kids...the parents are ultimately responsible for their sedentary lifestyle... The TV & computers have become the babysitters, teachers, & playmates...& they wonder why the rate of obesity is higher in the US among children than elsewhere...

It is sad but in many families there is not a safe place to go outside and play. TV is often a babysitter. In the USA there is at least and attempt at making children's programing wholesome.

With what you just said maybe we are the ones that have went the wrong way for there is not many families that really and truly come together on a daily bases as a family in the US. Sad but true too many times you will see latch key kids or those that are so involved with tv and video games they have no clue what it is like to be in a family environment. To many times parents are so stretched with what time they do have they find anything to keep the kids busy that does not involve them having to deal with them. So not really sure who in fact has come out ahead here. To me it sounds like the family togetherness we had back in the 30's - 60's that we in fact bucked the system and pulled away from.

Seeing some of the crap that we have on TV nowadays I think it's a good idea. Kids these days are glued to the TV or video games or computers and they are not getting enough real world, hands on, experience. I do feel bad about the older folks that can't do anything else. By the way, my mothers side of the family is from Transivania and Munich. |
