which can you handle and/or prefer?

oddly enough, after years of being forced to watch everything in sap with subs i'm used to it. so i like subtitles.. but most people i know hate having to read through a movie.

i just feel when anything is dubbed... its changing the original meaning and format. it feels.. wrong to me.

but strangely... i've never had a prob watching ANIME dubbed but my best friend swears he will never do it again when he discovered that the stuff dubbed is washed down from its original sometimes more vulgar meanings. :(

who knew?

so what about you?

I like subtitles. Once I get the gist to what the movie is about, I can enjoy watching it. That...and I can learn a new word or phrase in a different language. happy

Subtitles.

My favorite movie "life is beautiful" is an italian subtitles movie.

Both when possible. But if I have to choose one or the other, I'll take the subs. Better to have the original dialogue.

I've watched a movies and anime that was dubbed with the subtitles going at the same time.

I've found that the dubbing changes the language too much to match the culture it was dubbed into.

While the subtitles are more accurate to the intent for the culture the movie or anime was created for.

In the end, I would MUCH prefer the subtitles. The great thing about watching movies created for other cultures is to get a peek into the mindset of other people, to get a feel for how they view things.

And a very good way to know how good a movie was is if you read it but remember the movie as if you heard it.

I prefer subbed, but if the VAs who dubbed it are good (FMA, Cowboy Bebop) than I will watch that.

Subtitled

But, there are two movies I love because of the their dubbing- Monster Dog with Alice Cooper, a low budget Spanish horror flick. Alice Cooper didn't dub his own voice in English, so it's hilarious listening to him with another voice.

And the Italian 80's schlockfest- Pieces. I bought the new special edition that has both the subtitled and dubbed option. The subtitled version is boring, all the best dialogue is in the dubbed version.

Bad dubbing has killed some horror films for me. I kept hearing about how Fulci's House By The Cemetery was scary and creepy, and being that there was no subtitled version available I tried watching it dubbed. But the kids were dubbed by adults, and very badly. I just couldn't take the movie seriously, and the woman dubbing the boy's voice was so annoying I couldn't make it to the end.

Subtitles unless it is a Japanese horror or Chinese Kung Fu film. The awful dubbing in those types of movies adds to the overall cheesiness and effect.

subtitles work best for when there's an actual, serious story to pay attention to. City of God is a prime example. If you saw the follow up, City of Men, which is dubbed from portuguese, it loses alot of the impact.
That said, I simply cannot imagine enjoying any shaw brothers movie as much without the dubbed in voices. The Kid With the Golden Arms is a classic, as is The 3 Evil Masters. Not as fun with subtitles.
