The thing about the Tim Burton version of that story is that it was MUCH closer to the actual book than the original version was.

Depp played Willy Wonka exactly as Willy was portrayed in the original novel.

Having not read the novel, you have 1 over me. So I will withhold further judgment until having read it. Thanks for the insight.

Yes, I've read the book. But I still prefer Wilder's performance. The miniseries version of Stephen King's The Shining is closer to his novel, than Kubrick's film. But I still prefer Kubrick's.

I have never seen the mini series version of the Shining. I'm not really a fan of ' made for tv ' stuff anyway.

Being a heavy reader, I really do prefer when they at least make a good attempt to stick with the story as it was written.

I understand the need to use ' creative license ' as far s being able to effectively translate the book to film, but sometimes there isn't even a serious attempt.

Then again, in most cases, I have learned not to actually see a movie that is based on a book I have read....lol

Ooh I just looked it up and I Cant wait! I think it will probably have a darker theme(think of what did to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?) and actually I think Anne Hathaway will do a great job as the Queen.

I like most of Tim Burton's works...except the remakes. Wonka was horrible, and Planet of the Abes was terrible. So I'm going to be very hesitant about this movie, even tho Anne Hathaway is in it (and I see all her movies anyway >_>)

it's definitely going to be a darker flick, like what he did with Willy Wonka. hell, all of his films are dark.

i've said it plenty of time in the past, you can't go wrong with Tim Burton/ Johnny Depp flicks. every time they get together on a movie, it's great! can't wait to see this!

I wasn't that impressed with Burton's version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Depp's performance grew old after 10 minutes. Gene Wilder was incredible in that part, I think subtle worked much better for the character.

I agree about Gene's performance, especially in light of the fact that he made his mark by going over the top in most of his movies. He showed marked restraint & amazing dead-pan skills, in Willy. His performance will not be topped.

i dont think anyone expected to be topped.

the two rolls were the same by name but not by personality or notion. the one made by burton had and extremely heavy backstory that you cannot avoid. this completely changed the character. i enjoyed the movie but will never compare it to the old one because to me.. they are two totally different films.
