Are you an optimist or a pessimist? Do you rely on faith or logic?

Are our lives fated, or are we in control of our destinies? If you don't know the answers to these, don't worry. You're about to find out.

This test will judge you based on three characteristics (optimism, faith, and logic), and then assign a philosophy that most closely matches those characteristics. Remember to answer as honestly as you can, and the more time you spend thinking about questions, the better.

OPTIMIST

Optimists are a dying breed in this day and age. To the optimists, the world is a positive place. Everything is inherently good, and all things will work out in the end. They believe violence will one day be replaced with logic and reason, and that all religions can coexisist peacefully. These are the people who always see the glass half full, and believe that we live in the best possible world.

Rationalism is the most scientific of the philosophies. No matter how bizarre something may seem, rationalists will always discount the supernatural. To them, there is no such thing as a mystical, otherworldly explanation for anything, no exceptions. Everything, no matter how strange, can be proven through science sooner or later. If something is genuine, there is an explanation for it.

Famous rationalists include: Baruch Spinoza.

The opposite of Rationalism is Existentialism.

Optimsim 67%
Faith 54%
Logic 67%

The test is not very clear.

One question asked whether science and religion were compatible, but they didn't specify which religions? So I had to say "I don't know", it depends on the religion. There are religions that are compatible with science, and there are religions that aren't even compatible with their very doctrines much less with science.

A lot of the questions I had to answer "I don't know" simply because the questions were too vague to have a clue.

Rationalist
60 optimism, 44 faith, and 58 logic!

However, I don't have lot of faith in their test. laugh

I don't know what "44 faith" means, but I didn't feel that any of my answers require faith. I think they misunderstood my answers. laugh

The questions were far too vague. I think it was clear that whoever made this test was assuming a LOT. Like the religious versus science question. Without specifying which religion they're asking about how that question be answered with anything other than "I Don't know until you specify a religion damn it!" laugh

They also asked, "If A = B and B = C, then does A = C"

Well, again I had to answer "I don't know" because I don't know what system of logic they are referring to. If A, B and C are all natural numbers in mathematics then yes. But if they represent certain other kinds of numbers, or even other non-number logical premises, then maybe not.

So without knowing what they are referring to and how they are using the "equals symbol" then the only correct answer can be "I don't know until you explain more about what logical system you're referring to".

So I'm not impressed with the test.

The test is just for fun. drinker I am sure everyone has a better conclusion in what they think they are.

I think we have 3 optimists and 2 rationalists thus far.laugh

Sounds optimistically rational to me.laugh

Where you rated as a rationlist? I see that many who take this test become rationists.

Are there any options other than optimist and rationalist?

The description of rationalism seems kinda strong and very one sided. I would think I fall somewhere in between, leaning towards rationalinsm, but not totally discrediting optimism, fate, the supernatural, and the simply unexplainable.

I like being an optimist and running on faith. I worry not and at least I'm happy even if I can't logically explain things..

I enjoy not being able to explain things, it gives me something to think about, otherwise I am bored, so my conclusion is the same, but my behavior is different.

The best thing that can happen to a scientist is to have a mystery.

You know I didn't check that, but I am sure there are more options. If you look at members on this site they have beneath other options. I saw spiritualist in one of them.

#2. Is the sun going to rise tomorrow?

Definitely.

Probably.

There's no way of knowing for sure.

Definitely not.

This question is just plum stupid, suns do not rise, the earth turns. I would mark the questioner off on this one . . .
_____________________________________________________

#5. Is it possible for the human race to achieve perfection?

Yes - We can evolve into perfection.

Yes - We already have.

No - We are imperfect by nature.

I'm not sure.

Another option should be that perfection is subjective and thus relative to perspective.
___________________________________________________________

#6. Do you believe in fate (that a supernatural power has already determined how our lives will turn out)?

Yes - Our lives have been pre-determined.

No - We're in charge of our own destiny.

Some parts of our lives may be pre-determined, but the rest is decided by us.

I'm not sure.

Yes our lives are determined, as in "bound by cause and effect", should be another option, but sadly it appears this survey is dumbed down to excluded deeper thinking. Other deeper questions arise as well . . . sadly the limit of quick surveys. We have 20+ page forum threads on this one haha, so might be a problem hah.
__________________________________________

#7. Is there really such a thing as luck?

Yes - Luck is a force we can't control.

Yes - Luck is a force we can control to some extent.

No - Luck doesn't exist, only probability.

I'm not sure.

Luck exists but only as the acknowledgment of continued favorable probability. << just the way I would have worded it hehe
________________________________________________________

#9. Since food is so scarce in far northern climates, certain Eskimo tribes will kill infants or the elderly if supplies runs low. Is this an acceptable practice?

Yes - It's necessary for their survival.

No - There are other solutions available.

No - It's barbaric and morally reprehensible.

I'm not sure

Another option should be, ethics are relative
______________________________________________

#11. Is it possible for religion and science to co-exist?

Yes - They both answer our questions about life.

No - They rely on completely different methods of finding answers.

No - They both exist solely to discredit each other.

I'm not sure.

Another option should be religion answers no objective questions at all.
____________________________________________________

#12. Is there a possibility that the world around us is simply an illusion?

Yes - A definite possibility

Yes - A slight possibility

I'm not sure

No - It is completely impossible

Another option should be, Does it matter if it is? If all of reality is an illusions, then illusions are the basis for reality, and thus real . . . sadly this is an idiotic question as well given a materialistic naturalism perspective such as mine.
_____________________________________________

#13. Are there times when it's ok to force your opinions on other people?

Yes - When it will help to improve their lives

Yes - When their opinions are harmful to themselves or others

No - People should be free to live however they want

I'm not sure

I think the use of the word opinions is a poor choice, not sure how I would word it however . . . hmm
______________________________________________

#15. Do our lives really have any purpose?

Yes - Some people just haven't figured it out.

No - But we should continue living anyway.

No - Our lives are short and meaningless.

I'm not sure.

I would have another option be, we create our own purpose.
____________________________________

#17. Is it possible for humans to live forever?

Yes - The soul is eternal.

Yes - We just don't know how yet.

No - We can't stop our bodies from decaying.

I'm not sure.

Given ANY knowledge of cosmology the use of the word: forever, is extremely poorly used, and makes me choose an option I do not agree with.

I can imagine myself creating a proper survey that would allow someone to be 100% of any category even if it was unlikely.

I did enjoy it however!

Cheers!

laugh

My score was very close if not identical to IntelligentDesigners, however just for fun I answered unsure for every question and got this, I thought it was a funny Caricature.

Your result for The What's Your Philosophy? Test ...
Skeptic

42 optimism, 27 faith, and 44 logic!

The skeptic constantly lives in a state of denial - everything is false until proven otherwise. Skeptics refuse to follow religion, since it relies on theories that cannot be proven true or false. Likewise, they refuse to believe in most scientific research, since logic is viewed as an inadequate measure of truth (Just because A = B, and B = C, there's no proof that A = C). Although they can sometimes be depressing to talk to, skeptics are vital to scientific advancements, since they constantly look for problems with new theories.

Famous skeptics include: David Hume, Rene Descartes.

The opposite of Skepticism is Optimism.

I myself wonder how this description of skeptic fits with a 27% faith rating lol.

I guess 27% faith means that a skeptic has faith they do not know LOL. I also NEVER knew that the opposite of optimism was skepticism, I always thought it was pessimism lol. This was fun . . . if in a silly kind of way.
