Clearwater Police Say More Arrests Are Expected; Girl, a Runaway, Located Monday

(CBS) Police in Clearwater, Fla. Say they're investigating a case involving a 12-year-old girl who had consensual sex with several adult males.

According to Clearwater public information officer Elizabeth Watts, the girl was reported as a runaway Sunday. She was located at an apartment Monday where Watts said the sex took place.

At least four men have been arrested so far and charged with sexual battery and more arrests are expected, Watts said. It was not immediately clear how many men were involved in the underage sex - or in what capacity - but one source told CBS News the number could be as high as 25.

Watts said the police would release the identities of the suspects early Tuesday.

Consensual sex? With a 12 year old? I don't think so.

Disgusting pigs! That poor child, even if she did "consent" she probably has no concept of the repercussions of her actions, most kids that age cannot think that far ahead. She's gonna have a long road ahead of her to deal with this.

For the most part, at 12 years old, I was not thinking about sexual activity at all...I was probably still reading Teen Beat and looking at my posters of Davy Jones or Bobby Sherman...

I know that children are "sexualized" much earlier now than previous, and many 12-14 year old girls know quite a bit about sexual activity...but the maturity to have "consensual" sex? at 12? not hardly...

No such thing as consensual sex with a 12yr old. The law has an age limit because children to not have the capacity to make such a decision.

Yeah, it kills me that whoever wrote that story used that term. It implies that doing something like that is ok, because the child said yes. As if they even felt they could say no. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

They probably used that term because the girl didn't report it as a 'rape' or as an 'assault' No evidence of force or violence.
And the men said, she said it was OK.

Hopefully this child will get some real help.

Prostitution's illegal for adults. Paying her still does not make this consensual sex. And it would make it even more disgusting than it already is.

Whether the girl was paid or not is irrelevant. SHE WAS 12!!! These are grown a$$ men havin sex with a child!! I say throw 'em in general population of a max prison an let the rest of the inmates know what they did. It'll get taken care of.

It is in parts of Nevada, but not that whole state. I believe that brothels need to be located 50 miles (?) from major cities. I don't believe it's legal in Seattle.

However, whether or not prostitution is illegal is beside the point. Whether a 12 year old said yes, whether she was paid (for survival or not) are also beside the point. The point is, we live in a society where this type of behavior is not exactly ok, but people find all kinds of justification for rape and ways of making the rape of a 12 year old (and that's what it was, however you want to spin the words) seem not so bad. How and why did we as a society come to this point, where we can justify this by using different words that make it seem better, more socially acceptable, ok?

Rape, of a child or an adult, is NEVER ok, under any circumstances. If someone does not have the capacity to give an unqualified "yes" to the sexual act (be it because they are children or under the influence or whatever), then it is RAPE, it is a violent crime and it is WRONG!

The victim, whose name is withheld, apparently had consensual sex with the men, who will be charged with battery, police said.

Further information was expected to be released today.
