Yes, all calls to Canada are free. Vonage has absolutely horrible customer service, though, so keep that in mind when using them.

I work for the BOEPC (VZ) and it amazes me how many people disconnect their phone lines, dump the internet connection and snottily tell me "I am changing to Vonage" (or comcast or whoever). DUH! you need an internet connection to have phone service with a VOIP. The other major problem with VOIP phone service is that it basically SUCKS. The quality of the connections is substandard and if you lose power you lose your phone service. Not a problem in the normal course of ones life, but when some sort of disaster happens you are in trouble. cells phones only hold a charge for so long and won't tell EMS where to find you in case of emergency. If you really need to call your relatives to tell them you are ok or need help, a dead cell phone or a down VOIP phone won't help you.

I am not a huge fan of spending half of ones monthly salary on phone service, but if you are careful and ask questions about service, you can get a great deal on unlimited LD with all the trimmings, TV and a dedicated line internet service that's rated #1 in DSL service in the US.

How much does the unlimited phone service with verizon cost?

I use Majic Jack. 20$ and calls anywhere in the US and canada, with three way calling, caller id, call waiting, call forwarding, voice mail (copy is sent to email), and FREE 411 calls. And that is 20$ a YEAR. Plus it doesn't interferre with internet connections, plus everything I mentioned, comes with the yearly price.
I couldn't beat that with a stick if I wanted too!

Well I can tell you that I have had Vonage for about 3 years now. I have received better service and customer support from them then I had ever dreamed of receiving from Verizon or any other company. Yes you do need a high sped internet connection to use it but it is stil far less expensive then VERIZON.

And if you do work for verizon which I have little doubt on you might want to find out how many of their calls are routed over the internet. I would be willing to bet it is close to 50% of their calls or more. I would also like to see verizon come up with a plan that allows unlimited calls to USA, Canada and Europe for under 25 dollars a month like Vonage does.

Another point you did not bring up Vonage is portable you can take your phone adapter with you on trips and connect it to any high sped network to make and receive phone calls you can't do that with verizon. Now that could be a negative as well though as if your traveling with it you should notify the company of where you are in case of emergency so 911 will work properly. Then again most of us have cell phones and if our cell phone was built in the last 5 or so years then it would be required to have a gps built in as part of the E-911 laws in which case it can be tracked to within about 3 feet of where the phone is on the planet.

Another thing you did not mention was the calls verizon calls or used to call local long distance do they still have that or is it either local or long distance these days.

Yeah, with as much trouble as I've had with Vonage, I seriously doubt I'd ever go back to Verizon and pay more money for the same service I have now.

We had VOIP through Charter Comm. Man did it bite. We had a service person out 3 times in the first 3 months. That doesn't include modem resets and just waiting for it to come back. I don't care if its free, I don't want it. Now a co-worker who lives less than a mile away has it, same company, never has had any trouble at all.

If it weren't for having to use the phone at home for work, I'd get rid of a land line all together and just use my cell.

I have a nightmare story with Vonage.

This was, when I had a DSL internet (that's still your phone lines).

So I ordered the thing, but of course, they didn't inform me, that I would need a cable internet not DSL.

So I already have the stuff , didn't even opened the package. Meanwhile I discuss the whole thing with Vonage on the phone, telling them, that I will not install another land line, and I'm not gonna switch to cable internet, rather just forget the whole thing, I'm canceling this whole thing.

So they tell me to send the stuff back. So I did.

2 Months down the road, I'm looking at my checking account and I notice that Vonage never refunded me for the equipment and also charged me twice for the service out of my checking account.

So I call them back and ask them what the hell is going on...and this rude a$$hole, tells me, that "my returned package was 1 day late" out of the trial period (it's a lie) and they have to charge for the equipment, even if I have returned it (unopened).

Then I ask them, why are they charging my account, I don't even have the equipment, I'm not using Vonage. I want that money refunded ASAP. So they tell me, "That's impossible". I get really pi$$ed off and tell them to cancel this immediately, that I will never recommend their service ever to anybody and tell them to go to hell.

One month later, I see Vonage charged my account again. I call them again and ask them just WHAT THE HELL they are thinking charging me for something I don't even use..so they tell me, they gonna charge me for 2 years, every month, because I signed a contract with them, when I bought the Vonage pacakge. Then I tell them, You guys are a bunch of criminals, because I returned the package and they gave me the BS story about being one day late out of the "trial period" and I don't even have the equpiment, never used their service and now you gonna charge me for 2 years for nothing???

The rude a$$ b1tch tells me "yes", I'm afraid, and hangs up the phone on me.

I had to change checking account numbers to get rid of them.

never ever ever ever will recommend them, I will attack them in any possible way I can, they robbed me 250 bucks , which I won't see again.

I can't really recommend Vonage either. I was without service for about a month because I had to go through hours on the phone over several days with tech support for them to finally agree that it was their device that had gone bad, rather than my internet service. They finally agreed to send me a new device two weeks later. Though, as horrible as their customer service was, they did give me two free months after that.

and now, I got cable internet but I use Magickjack. Paid 50 bucks ahead for the whole year (free calls anywhere in the US). The real reason is not to call around USA (I use my cell most of the time), but because their international rate is unbeatable and I pay first to have a balance , which I can talk off.

I actually set down and calculated around, and getting rid of AT&T, saves me over 70 bucks a month, not mentioning of the international rate they had was murderous.
