someone with good knowledge on the civil war...should start a thread sometime. it would be interesting. Im not entirely sure that the history books actually show the truth of the civil war and that Abe Lincoln truly was so antislavery as he is portrayed today.

Hahahaha! You guys are funny. I have studied US history extentively, so don't gimme that nonsense! Of course the very first grave at Arlington belongs to a confederate.... Arlington was property of the Confederate President and was ceased by US government once the war ended. And no, face facts, the south was fighting for their constutional rights, correct, but their constitutional rights to KEEP SLAVES. Good day to you both, defenders of the confederacy. Raise your confederate flags in your backyards and hang from your garage doors with pride. LOL The African American population still living in the south, I wonder what the confederate flag symbolizes to them....!

His Home is a memorial to him now! Robert e Lee married Geo Washingtons grand daughter and upon refusal to lead the Northern Army, and it being so close to Wash DC, he moved. It was then that the North took possession of the estate and made a camp on it! The first soldier buried there, a confederate, died as a POW!

Many of the Generals and men serving on both sides were already Veterans of the Mexican War!

They understand the war was not fought merely for slavery! Even Lincoln did not fight the war to free slaves. That was an after-thought and a weapon used by him to defeat the South! Look at the dates of the Emancipation Proclamation if you doubt me!

If the CSA had won the war there would still be a USA and there would not be slavery today! The South did not fight for slavery! They fought for their rights as guaranteed by the Constitution! Agress 100%...

You see the North hid behind the concept that the Federal government needed to have more power over the states, in order to "abolish" slavery. In fact, I'm pretty sure some states were allowed to keep slavery after the civil war. I just know the emancipation proclamation did not abolish slavery in any southern state that remained nuetral throughout the course of the war. What you will find, when america was formed, is that the states were to pretty much self-govern. After the civil war, the states were pretty much governed primarily by a central government. Many would agrue that most of our problems today, could be avoided simply by the states having more say in what they do. After all, how the hell would californian's know what's best for us mainers in the first place? The south didn't fight so hard just for the right to own people. They just didn't want the Federal Government overriding their rights to govern themselves. Remember?

Many States would never have seceded had the Union not threatened to march into their territory! Invasion was what drew many into the fray!

They were all, on both sides, Americans! Many were cousins, brothers, sons, and fathers fighting against each other. They were all brave and honorable. We must honor them all!
