My apologies to you Catwoman for potentially starting an ugly debate on your page, but to elaborate on my previous post above in regards to remembering and honoring the confederate soldiers...
Let's not forget what side they were on and what they were fighting for, most notably pro-slavery! If we are going to blindly honor any American fallen soldier, NO MATTER WHAT CAUSE THEY WERE FIGHTING FOR, then we might as well visit Timothy McVeigh (Oklahoma bomber's) grave and leave him a rose and an American flag. After all, he was an American soldier fighting for what HE believed in, right? Or perhaps some of us wish we were living in the CSA today, as opposed to the USA. I'm just sayin'... |

I'm sorry but I seriously doubt my dad would be offended if people remember those that are currently in other countries serving this country. I think he would be more disappointed if they werne't honored as well....but that's JMO That's Veterans Day Rose! |

Traditional observance of Memorial day has diminished over the years. Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country.
There are a few notable exceptions. Since the late 50's on the Thursday before Memorial Day, the 1,200 soldiers of the 3d U.S. Infantry place small American flags at each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery. They then patrol 24 hours a day during the weekend to ensure that each flag remains standing. In 1951, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of St. Louis began placing flags on the 150,000 graves at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery as an annual Good Turn, a practice that continues to this day. More recently, beginning in 1998, on the Saturday before the observed day for Memorial Day, the Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts place a candle at each of approximately 15,300 grave sites of soldiers buried at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park on Marye's Heights (the Luminaria Program). And in 2004, Washington D.C. held its first Memorial Day parade in over 60 years. To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps." http://www.usmemorialday.org/backgrnd.html |

Happy????
There is nothing happy about it! It's a day of sadness and remembrance for the Fallen! -------------------------------------------------------------------- To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps." --------------------------------------------------------------------- It evidently did not work! |

Fanta...come on. One must feel good things when it comes to death to come to terms with it. Happy we are still free and happy someone had the balls to do what many have not. Happy to know that there are those that stood for something other than themselves. Happy to have the freedom to memorialize our fallen who served so bravely.
Not happy "ho ho ho laugh out loud happy". Wait...maybe that is where it has gone so wrong...people thinking it means get drunk happy. Kat |

That would be dishonoring the fallens unselfish act with a selfish one. It would be blasphemy! |

Yes, I celebrate Memorial Day!
I have a cousin who died in the line of duty... He was recruited by the Army as a translator as he (like me) speaks 3 dialects of Persian which is valuable knowledge for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, as the Afghani people use 2 of those dialects. Today we are gathered at my uncle's house, having a blast remembering my cousin, what a knuckle head he was growing up and how he'd kick all of his siblings and cousins' asses, pretending to be G.I.Joe. He had told us that should he die in Afghanistan, not to shed a tear or mourn his loss, but to celebrate his life. We are proud that as a 1st generation American family, we were able to contribute to protecting American rights and freedom. So Fanta dear, please lighten up! |

I think he would be more disappointed if they werne't honored as well....but that's JMO That's Veterans Day Rose! Fanta...I celebreate every day with my beliefs and many things...not just on one special day. I know what the days are meant for...don't for one second think I don't. This is how I was taugt by my dad who died while on duty in the AF....to remember those that died, currently serving and the vets ever day...not just one day out of the year. you celebrate it how you want...I celebrate them every day |

We have Veterans Day!
Honor those who survived on that day! We have Flag Day. Honor the Flag on that day! This day belongs to the heroes who will never see another day! |

We have Veterans Day! Honor those who survived on that day! We have Flag Day. Honor the Flag on that day! This day belongs to the heroes who will never see another day! why honor just on one day out of the year??? how about honor all every day |

My final statement, then I'm out of this thread:
I celebrate Memorial Day because my cousin who died in Afghanistan wished us to celebrate this day, not to mourn. I refuse to honor the confederate soldiers on this day because had the south won, I would rather not be living in the Confederate States of America. I'd most likely be a Canadian citizen. So once again, Happy Memorial Day to one and all...! |

We have Veterans Day! Honor those who survived on that day! We have Flag Day. Honor the Flag on that day! This day belongs to the heroes who will never see another day! why honor just on one day out of the year??? how about honor all every day I am a VET!!!! If you really want to honor us then quit arguing! This is not our day! It is a day to honor our fallen brothers who gave their lives in sacrifice for us all! Your words are contradicting! Your arguments dishonor! |

Fanta....I will celebrate ANY way I want. I celebrate all soldiers EVERY day as my father taught me. no just celebrate them one day out of the year...but EVERY day. I am not going to wait until after a soldier dies. I will thank them every day as well as the vets and honor those that have fallen. THAT IS WHAT MY DAD TAUGHT ME AND HIS WISHES!!!! I honor my dad doing this. My dad died when I was 7 on a routine mission in the AF!!!!!!! he would want all soldiers, vet and fallen to be honored daily, which I do!!!! to not do this would dishonor my dad!
like I said...you celebrate how you wish...I celebrate how I wish |
