Over the past century, more than 35 million men and women answered the call to arms in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq, and countless unnamed military engagements. More than half a million of them never came home. Some died in battle, others in captivity; all died too soon.

Recent military action in Afghanistan and Iraq has offered fresh reminders of the human reality of war: ordinary men and women leaving homes and families and all they know to risk their lives for an ideal of honor, or duty, or just to protect the soldier next to them.People of patriotism and goodwill may debate the merits of any given war, police action, or humanitarian mission. But there should be no debate about our debt to the hundreds of thousands of our citizens who have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives heeding the nation's call to service.

Memorial Day is more than the start of summer. It is a chance to pause and remember the sacrifices -- remember the gallantry and bravery -- remember the fallen.

Superman was not a hero because he couldn't be hurt. The real heroes are the ones who risk their lives for our freedoms. All are heroes.

Real Heroes are dead but they live on in our hearts and minds!

This is why we celebrate Memorial Day.
To remember the fallen!
Please remember that!

Veterans day is to salute vets!

As a vet I do not wish to detract this honor from the fallen.
This is their day not ours!

Excuse me Fanta; but to be honest....the very ones that serve our country right now are heroes in progress. They proudly and boldly serve us. Put their lives in danger. Is that not heroic? Do they really have to die to be heroes? I mean I understand what you are saying...but....We have injured soldiers that have to live with disabilities for the rest of their lives hon.
Is it not heroic to leave your family and life to serve your country when called on? Is that not to be admired? Our military now is one of the best ever. All inlisted. The call to arms now is a call obove and beyond. Above their own families and beyond borders in a far away land where danger is everywhere and blind in many ways. To volunteer to fight blindly an enemy that is barbaric and murderous...to not know your enemy by sight. No fighting eye to eye...face to face... but by roadside bombs and trash and cars and human bombs!

I salute you Fanta for your part as one of our own and proud soldiers. Desert storm was no picnic. You deserved to be recognized as does all those that serve in a time of need.

We disagree respectfully Fanta.flowerforyou "is there a "hug" icon"?

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

Veterans is the day to honor our veterans.
Everyday is a day to honor our current soldiers.

Personally I hate when people thank me on memorial day. It's not a day for me or veterans. It ia to honor those who died while serving.
Come veterans day then thank me and buy me a drink.

It actually began in 1867.

To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps."

The Moment of Remembrance is a step in the right direction to returning the meaning back to the day. What is needed is a full return to the original day of observance. Set aside one day out of the year for the nation to get together to remember, reflect and honor those who have given their all in service to their country.

I have a post in general about it.

I know that this is to honor all the dead soldiers. But it can also be to think about those that serve now and have somehow been forgotten about. We still have soldiers dying almost weekly. It has been almost not talked about.

I BET MOST STILL DON'T KNOW THAT 3:00 PM IS SET ASIDE TO REMEMBER IN OUR OWN WAY TO SHOW RESPECT FOR THE FALLEN.

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.

This is what we should be remembering.

Kat...I agree with you. I use this day to remember all of our soldiers...past, present and future. My dad died while on duty in the AF and he had taught me to honor all soldiers.

When I met with my son Jay at IHOP a two weeks ago before he left to go to Iraq...a man came up to him and thanked him for doing his service for us. I was very proud for him.

oops...."three weeks ago".

I'm sorry but I seriously doubt my dad would be offended if people remember those that are currently in other countries serving this country. I think he would be more disappointed if they werne't honored as well....but that's JMO

This is how I do it...

I go to photobucket, put in a search word, then I choose one of the pix that shows up, and click on it... 4 sets of codes pop up... The last one is the one that works with mingle². It starts with IMG in brackets...!

Happy Memorial Day to you...

Wait...

What were the Confederate soldiers fighting for again?

Once again, I'm confused.
