Why can't be something else than those 3??

I'm sick and tired of all of them.

Here is my requirement for an OS:

I want to launch applications.

That's it.

[sarcasm]How about DOS?[/sarcasm]

About all linux apps can be downloaded for free.

It's not how many applications , but having an OS that won't interfere ,but easy to use, and doesn't give me limitations on use and make me sign all sorts of BS and even limits me when and how I want to launch that application.

Have you tried Linux recently. It is not nearly as complicated as it claimed to be and with a little learning and work you can tweak almost everything. There are many ways of installing and using Linux besides the most common automatic methods. You could compile everything from source if you are the masochistic type, but there is no need to do so.

I have all 3. Linux (ubuntu), Mac OsX and Vista.

All of them suck equally. smile2

Haven't come across that too often. I know though that none of them are perfect. Even my favorite (Linux) pisses me off sometimes. Though I have never really like the Ubuntu flavor of Linux. Have you tried any other distributions of Linux. For other alternative OS's (I don't know what your needs are) there are various flavors of BSD, there is Open Solaris (and few derivatives), ReactOS (though still in beta), Haiku, FreeDos, AROS. There are bunch listed in this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=344425.

Btw, Aple has officially surrendered to PC, as far as hardware goes. I am guessing this is still a big secret to Mac fans. Inside of you Mac, is a pure PC.

Why? Because Mac hardware, true kind, couldn't keep up with PC speeds, and so it become pointless, and was replaced and thrown away.

So, now, besides your one button mouse, and weird cd-rom opening button, there is nothing but MacOS on a PC that you're running. That's what we call "pink shades", no kidding.

Seriously:

March 3, 2009

Apple today announced updates to its iMac and Mac mini desktop lines, including a 24-inch iMac that is priced more affordably than ever before and a Mac mini with powerful new integrated graphics. For the same $1,499 price as the previous generation 20-inch iMac, the new 24-inch iMac delivers a 30 percent larger display, twice the memory and twice the storage.

Delivering up to five times better graphics performance, the updated Mac mini now features the same groundbreaking NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics introduced with the aluminum unibody MacBook family.* The Mac mini is the world’s most energy efficient desktop, drawing less than 13 watts of power when idle.** All iMac and Mac mini systems come with Mac OS X Leopard , the world’s most advanced operating system, and iLife ’09, Apple’s unparalleled suite of consumer applications for managing and organizing photos, making movies and creating and learning to play music.

Apple today introduced the new Mac Pro using Intel “Nehalem” Xeon processors and a next-generation system architecture to deliver up to twice the performance of the previous generation system.* The new Mac Pro starts at $2,499 and features the latest graphics technology and an updated interior that makes expansion even easier than before.

What Mac? bigsmile

PC Platform is what Macs are running on. Mac "hardware" is now a mouse, monitor and a keyboard.

Props to everyone in this thread who are reminding us that PC is a platform, windows is an OS. as a debian & ubuntu enthusiast, its always disappointing when people equate PC with windows.

If we're comparing mac hardware to general PC hardware, i think its obvious that apple's hardware is a rip off. Too bad apple will SUE YOU if you install macOS on non-mac PCs - then we could begin to have a fair comparison of price, performance, etc.

I hope anti-trust litigation eventually catches up with apple and ends this kind of nonsense:

http://www.macworld.com/article/136934/2008/11/psystar.html

If you've already purchased a Mac machine (and with it the Mac OS) and a few years later you want to move that OS over to some good hardware at a great price - you should be able too, without being forced to buy the overpriced systems that apple sells.

About anti-trust:
Have the been "keeping up with" Microtosh? Or did that get a bit quieter since the FBI got involved?

I'm with you though, I don't even believe in intellectual property; if I was to write a book, the price of it would merely be to cover printing costs- otherwise I'd give it away free.

That's because the people who find it good, never shaved with a straight edge or an electric razor. (see above). The honestly believe shaving with bowling pin is as good as it gets.

Once they try PC, even with Windows loaded, they are laughing at their own former tastes.

Most of Mac lovers can't name a task that can be done on a Mac and cannot be done on PC. Yet, they sure Mac is better. They simply believe in an old story that they have heard from someone who didn't know about computers, and got his lesson in a Mens room. He heard that Macs are better at graphics.

I am not kidding, ask anyone.

What that was all about is an age old story about PCs having black and green or black and brown display so many characters wide and so many chars high. It was very tough to do graphic tasks on it.

That is what they are talking about, and the fact that they don't realize that this is simply not the case anymore, is showing us the extent of their computer knowledge.

No, nor have I kept up on the above referenced case, which is old news. Microsoft, Sony, Apple, all the big players do horribly anti-competitive things, and people keep buying their crap. I'm not against "intellectual property", and I have mixed feelings about copyrights, patents, trademarks, etc - but certain methods some companies use to lock people in just strike me as totally wrong.

I think the US government under the last administration was deliberately light on these matters, unlike the EU. Think about it: to the degree to which Microsoft and Apple sell products outside the US, and hire people and/or amass wealth inside the US, they bring money into the US economy. Could this be a conflict of interest for the US government?

I've had a PC forever and I don't really plan on switching over to Macs. I'll learn to use them since I know I'll need to, but I prefer PCs more.

Strictly PC....Mac is only good for skeet shooting, and the occasional paper weight or door stop.
