How Fast do you think is safe to go past a cop on the interstate?

Me and about 5 cars were going about 70 past a "state trooper" on 40 west in Tennessee today and he kept going. Speed Limit is 55 but it changes to 65 in about 2 minutes where I was. Was I going too fast? Would you go 70 in a 55 near a police man? What do you do safely on the interstate?

nope... 5 mph is about all I will push it...

I usually drive within 5 (heck, I have a Jeep, it's not a race car!)

built into the police radar is a plus or minus 5 MPH tolerance. If you're going more than 5 MPH over they'll pull you over

sometimes if you're lucky they won't have the radar turned on. But I never drive more than 5 MPH over

I get scared here...so I hardly EVER go past 60 when I'm in a 55! but its weird...because the speed limit is 55...so when its about to change to 65 i gradually move up to 65 and before I knew I was at 70...and there goes the cop...past all of us...it was crazy!

I go whatever everyone else is going... What are the odds of there being more then 1 cop car and if we're all going the same speed limit... who would that 1 cop pull over.. hopefully not me bigsmile

My husband and brother in law were both police officers and they didn't pull anyone over unless it was over 5 miles an hour. Too much paperwork. I admit to driving to fast if running late for work or out in the country.

that doesn't always hold true Last summer I was coming from Myrtle beach On the interstate everyone was doing 70-75 even cars were passing me. I got pulled over by a local cop claims I was doing 70 in a 55. I was probably the only one with out of state plates at the time. Seems NC has this law its considered a mandatory court appearence for that. But then put the ticket on court doc and then you get all the lawyers from the area calling you wanting to represent you in court.. All in All it cost $325. . The ticket was reduced to op a vehicle with improper equipment. no points no speeding ticket on your record.... good scam ..

There is no way to ever know what is a safe speed to go over the limit when you see a cop. It all depends on the cop, what kind of mood they are in, what time their shift ends, things like that. A cop might pull over someone going 6 over at the start of his shift, but not pull someone over going 10 over at the end of his shift because he is too focused on getting back to the station so he can go home.

This is not hardly ever true when driving on I40... Always I see several cops, usually on motorcycles, all about 1/2 a mile to a mile away from each other. So, I would say be careful, but I know you, and I know how you drive... so I know that you most likely have NOTHING to worry about!! lol... I'm joking, but so serious at the same time! lmao!

I will pass a police car if he is going under the limit (and they do do that and everyone is afraid to pass). I travel I-64 in WVA and VA alot going to south of Norfolk...I fly, sometimes I do 80 but there is hardly any traffic between Charlston, WVA and Richmond...I'm always in high speed but do observe speed limits in most places laugh

Pffft! I've been doing 80+ on the interstate (amongst other cars going the same speed), and cops have zinged right past all of us. He wasn't on his way to anything, either.

Good for you! Thats right! People pay attention! See...slowing down just because you see a cop is silly. I totally agree with silverfox! Its so silly when you see four cars just put on their brakes when they see a cruiser even if the speed limit is 65 and theyre going 68....Talk about drawing attention to an unneeded situation! That would be like trying to steal something and putting your hand over your coat when somebody looks at you!

We usually get a 15 MPH leeway around Atlanta. Here, if you're doing the speed limit, you're gonna get plowed by some trucker not paying attention. Either that or you'll get the bird flipped at you by every other driver that passes you.
