I am a smoker
I pay for my own insurance
if and when I am ready to quit smoking will be my decision
I don't ask for a hand out, work hard for what I have, I help others - why can't ya just let me be

earmark tax from - people who drink, people who eat snacks, people who eat fast foods

smokin

This is how it involves all of us.

My father smoked. He quit 12 years ago. He now has chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and severe COPD. He has the inhalers, meds, and oxygen. He is slowly dying from severe COPD. He's 71 years old. Yeah, it sucks.

Medicare pays for my Dad's health care. All of the retired people that smoked and are sick from it - Medicare pays for their health care. When they get sick from the cigs before retirement, state health care might be paying for it.

Just saying.

Winx - I think you are a great person and I am truly saddened your father is not well. But Winx, working people all contribute to our social security and medicare by way of payroll tax deductions.

This 'special/sin tax' should also be applicable to those who eat potato chips, chocolate, candy bars, etc. As people are more apt to get sick and have more disabilities due to obesity than cigarettes, but as a smoker I am biased.

Thanks, Fran. I think you're great person too.flowerforyou

I just see both sides. You know that I'm a smoker too.

I was hearing this morning about how the Medicare expenditures are escalating. That's how it got on my mind. They're saying that it's running out of money.

They are saying the same about the social security taxes we get deducted from our payroll - all these years contributing to ss and med - and I may not ever get any of those benefits to which I involuntarily contribute to.

Pre-Reagan....You mean the, fabulously, productive Jimmy Carter era????

Double digit Inflation
Double digit interest rates
Double digit unemployment

The top tax rates were 70% from 1971 to 1980. and higher than than that prior to 1971. The 1950's tax rates were 90%. Yes, Let go back to that....

So if we only go backwards a little bit...it's ok???? how far back is it going???

He didn't go back that far.laugh

I say let's not go back at all.

Let's learn from our past mistakes and make productive choices today that will have a positive effect on our futures - not the same old blind leading the blind crap.
