The addage rob Peter to pay Paul comes to mind when we talk about taxes in this country. It is all an illusion that we are benifitting from being taxed. If the cigarette tax actually went to help people quit or pay medical expenses that would be fine. The problem is it goes to pay for the pay raises for congress.

It's goes towards funding for SCHIP - State Children's Health Insurance Program.

Yet another promise kept. Oh wait he didnt promise to raise taxes sorry

He said those making over $250,000 a yr could count on it!

Do you make over $250,000 a yr?
If so he's promised to Tax you more.drinker

No I dont but with him raising taxes on people making over 250,000, I have friends who own small businesses and they are going to hve to raise their prices to cover their tax increase in order to stay in business. So we all pay for those tax increases.

OK I have one question with that tax going to SCHIP. What happens if people stop smoking and that tax revenue is gone but the program must still be paid for where does the funding come from then?

This is how it involves all of us.

My father smoked. He quit 12 years ago. He now has chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and severe COPD. He has the inhalers, meds, and oxygen. He is slowly dying from severe COPD. He's 71 years old. Yeah, it sucks.

Medicare pays for my Dad's health care. All of the retired people that smoked and are sick from it - Medicare pays for their health care. When they get sick from the cigs before retirement, state health care might be paying for it.

Just saying.

It hasn't happened yet. So why even go there? Do you honestly think that many people will quit smoking?

Why don't you see it? They can't work if they're too sick. They either get Medicare from disability or state health care if they're not on disability. If they're poor and on Medicare, state health care will be their secondary insurance.

Of course non-smokers get Medicare.

that is just the taxpayers paying for others which would be more welfare. if I remember correctly...with medicare....workers pay taxes into it and can receive it later.

But when more people need more medical, it increases the Medicare expenses. Medicare is spending a lot of money right now. We don't know how long it will last, the way it's going.

Winx - I think you are a great person and I am truly saddened your father is not well. But Winx, working people all contribute to our social security and medicare by way of payroll tax deductions.

This 'special/sin tax' should also be applicable to those who eat potato chips, chocolate, candy bars, etc. As people are more apt to get sick and have more disabilities due to obesity than cigarettes, but as a smoker I am biased.

Thanks, Fran. I think you're great person too.flowerforyou

I just see both sides. You know that I'm a smoker too.

I was hearing this morning about how the Medicare expenditures are escalating. That's how it got on my mind. They're saying that it's running out of money.
