my last dog ahd to be put down because he had a tumor growing on his liver. we had to put him down beacuse he was getting mean and would nip at you when you tried to pet him and stuff. cant blame him, he was probably in a good omount of pain.

id have to say when your dogs sickness alters its personality.

That is a very personal decision and has more to do with what your beliefs and thoughts are.
Personally I have never had an animal put dowmn, but I don't think I could watch one of my animals suffer.

why is it that society is so quick to recommend putting a sick animal down... but when a human being has cancer we are more willing to keep fighting, tooth and nail, until the end?

Jas, that's a very difficult question to answer. For myself personally, if there was nuthin that could be done to ease their sufferin or to make their life more comfortable then I think that's the time. I fortuanately have never had to make that decision. My mom made it for me once. She waited until I left for AF basic trainin an had my beloved Charlie put to sleep. She had contracted Heartworms. My mom had her put through 2 rounds of treatment to no avail. I truly think that once I left, Charlie quit fightin an mom had no other choice but to ease her sufferin. shades

When their pain is to much
When there is no cure
It's a hard thing to do

I've had to put a few of my dogs down over the years. Just did all I could and waited until I knew that they were not going to get better.

Just a few months ago my dog got really sick. I took her to the vet and all he found was that her liver was not functioning properly, but had no real cure. He gave me some pills to give her. I did but they did no good.

She wouldnt eat at all so I mashed chicken and Vienna sausages up and shoved them down her throat and also fed her chicken broth in a syringe for over a month...6 or more times a day. She finally started eating again and is doing great. But a few times I decided that I was going to have to shoot her. Glad I didn't.

flowerforyou I would consider how the animal was feeling, is it still capable of getting around ok, can it still show you it wants to eat? Does it still come to you for love and comfort? Mostly is it in pain? These would be critical things I would look for, if any of this goes away and your pet would seek a place of darkness then it is time for it to go. Never an easy decision, but it is one made of love! I wish you comfort during this time.flowerforyou

Apologies, that was rather distasteful thinking about it.

Very good question. I think assisted suicide should be a person's choice. I had to watch my mom suffer with a great deal of pain as she fought breast cancer. She fought valiantly for years. Near the end she knew the fight was done. And she did think about an discuss suicide with me. I honestly think she should have had that option if she wanted it. shades

I can't answer for everyone but only for myself. First, I love and adore animals, I've always had pets and always will and think of them as part of my family. They are my babies. But, when an animal gets terminally ill, I think putting them to sleep as as kind and compassionate thing you can do for the animal you love. An animal cannot think, speak or make decisions on their own, they cannot decide to go through the illness, and the pain etc, the way a human can. All they know is that they are ill and in pain, they don't know or understand why. And, for many animals, these measure do not cure or even prolong their lives. So, you have an animal who is sick and suffering and we as their humans make it worse. Is that love? Or is it selfishness on our part? I believe it's selfishness, it is because I cannot bear losing them, it is for my benefit and not theirs.

Often pets will 'disappear' or run off to die. I've had had cats do that a couple times. Twice we found them and got them to the Vet, once she left and we never found her. When we moved my daughters were still hoping to find her as we drove down the street for the last time.
