I turn stuff off all the time don't need a special day to do it I am the one that goes around turning off lights and unplugging things that are soaking up electricity... just call me the Unplug Queen i'm with ya on this one. everything i can unplug in my house is unplugged till i need it. I even turn the breaker off to my hot water heater on the days i go to the gym. |

turning your lights off for an hour to conserve entergy sounds like a good idea on paper but in the real world, if you factor in human nature, it will have the opposite effect. what are these people gonna do for an hour in the dark?
9 months from now there will be untold numbers of babies born. just think of how many disposable diapers are gonna go to landfills because of that 1 hour of saving energy. 10 years from now, all of those energy babies are gonna be playing their video games, making trips to the fridge for snacks, leaving lights on, etc. etc. etc. you get the picture. in reality, that 1 hour of savings now is gonna cost in the future. but that is just human nature. OK EVERYBODY, LIGHTS OUT. |

But unfortunately if my elderly mom woke and got up she would be freaked out with no lights.... My brother turns off all the lights and she gets scared.... So lights on.... And for me...I willl turn lights and computer off in my room...but t.v stays on ...cause Marines,Iraqi's and gun fire have entered my brain again..... So my son is trying to make changes in our world...so grandmom and mom get a break... |

We flicked the mains at some time last night, had 47 candles on the back deck and played a fabulous game of Scrabble!!!!!!!!
Two hours and 35 mins later we realised that we could turn a light back on, finished our world championship round, and went to bed... (we put the mains back on this morning) We d*ckneads had Earth Night instead! |

I didn't do it, for several reasons.
First of all, I don't believe in this "global warming" apocalypse that the government keeps shoving down our throats. Even if, by some slim, minute chance that something MAY happen as a result of this so-called "disaster", it's not going to happen in OUR lifetime, or for many lifetimes after we're gone. For thousands of years, unusual weather conditions have peaked and ebbed at different times, yet the world has still stayed its course. Ours is the only generation who has ever lost their friggin' minds about it. Secondly, all those appliances with the "vampire lights". It doesn't take a nuclear physicist to know that all those little lights are each using a very small amount of electricity. Sure, collectively, all those little lights worldwide probably take a good chunk of juice. However, the technological advancements that have occured during our lifetimes have made all these types of appliances that we all use every single day a virtually unavoidable necessecity. Aside from the fact that most refrigerators do not have these little lights, it's still not the brightest idea in the world for everyone to shut down their 'fridge for an hour. So much for technology. Thirdly, the whole "lights out for an hour" thing is a farce. Even if it says you should do it in "your local time", what difference does it make? The people in the time zone to the west of you still have their lights on for that time. Then, when it's their turn to "dim out", the people in the time zone to the west of THEM still have THEIR lights on, and we can turn OURS back on. Nobody is gaining anything! It's very much like watching a crowd do the Wave at an NFL football game. At the end of the exercise, if everyone in the world were to participate, the amount of energy saved in the whole world would collectively be essentially only from one area for one hour. Yay! We've saved a couple of bucks! Woo-hoo! I don't know who's more odd: the people who come up with this stuff, or the people who buy into it. |

I was shopping for food at a 24hrs kinda place, where the lights blaze like a beacon of hope in the despairing darkness of being alone on a Sat. night

It's comforting to know that the powers that be all over the world have dedicated and entire HOUR to the betterment of earth. Or perhaps it's just to get us used to living in the dark.

My kids and I lived for 13 years 'off the grid'....the eldest two had known no different for most of their formative years... What I notice now living in the alleged 'real world' is we are all easily distracted by the gadgetry of this society... Earth Hour, earth Day, earth year.... it is a great reminder for my family, to stop with the distractions, and enjoy the silences, and the human company we have right in front of us. |

Yeah, but you're way down in Australia, Lee. You have to pedal the generator for electricity.

I don't buy into Global Warming. Remember in the mid 60s? Is was all about the Ice Age hysteria! More than anything, Earth Hour was a gesture. Did it solve anything? No. Bring awareness? Maybe? I did it for peace and quiet. It was a halcyon moment, and that was enough to make it worth the effort. |
